About this listen

What would you do if your son became a stranger overnight?

Tired of their cramped London apartment, Aaron and Meera relocate to the idyllic village of Little Crake along with their two children, Noah and Uma. The new cottage looks out over the many miles of woodland beyond. It’s a far cry from their tiny flat and the perfect fresh start.

Until fifteen-year-old Noah wanders alone into the forest. For three days, a search party combs the woods. Aaron braces himself for the worst, convinced his son is lost forever. Until he finds Noah alive, hiding in the hollow of a tree. It feels like a second chance.

But why doesn’t Noah remember those three days in the woods? And why are there strange cuts slashed across his torso? Why did he cover himself in mud and hide away in an old oak tree?

Once a studious and gentle boy, Noah becomes a troublemaker at school. He withdraws from his family, sleepwalks at night, and creates eerie sketches of Dark Valley Forest. Aaron tells himself that Noah just needs time to readjust. He’ll soon be himself again. But Meera believes otherwise. This new version of Noah is harsh and cruel—a complete stranger.

A mother knows when something is wrong with her child. Aaron may be deluded, but she knows the boy who came back from the woods is not their son.

Enjoyable and creepy

I enjoyed the mystery and creepiness of the story. I liked trying to guess how it would unravel and I liked the different perspectives the writer used. The narrator did an excellent job.

I’m wish I could say “F Word - that was a good book!” In this review

I’m can’t say the swear word, but as it ended I said that exact phrase out loud. I was skeptical in the beginning cos I don’t like scary stuff - but I kept going - the way it’s written - to me - is unique and genius - I googled if it was a true story or not.. well done.. dark, slightly disturbing - but not too bad for a “sensitive viewer” type person. This was very well written - again in my opinion. I can’t call it enjoyable because that’s not the emotion I felt listening. I felt like I couldn’t stop, I wanted to know what happened next, the spiritual stuff was on the edge - so not too scary I’d put the book down - just intriguing enough that I kept listening. A review I read kind of gave it away slightly - but for me personally, I wouldn’t have read it without that review, it made me feel like it would be ok and not give me nightmares. I’m gushing now I know - but man - you’re a great author. I think that was a very very good book!! Well narrated as well, well done all involved!!

Supernatural

When I read the summary I didn’t realise it was supernatural which I’m not that keen on, that’s the reason I only gave it three stars. I really enjoy this writers other books though.

She's done it again

There's something magical about Sarah's work. She transports me like no other. The amount of time, background information and passion she puts into each creative work is outstanding! Shoutout to Audible studios for another great voice talent to bring her piece to life!

this was an ok listen, bit far fetched but that's the style

This was an ok listen. I didn't mind the writing style of diary entries, but the story was a bit far fetched and there could have been much more character development. It fell a bit flat. The ending I also didn't enjoy.

Okay for a trashy listen

This is an easy holiday read, not too annoying even though it is a bit dragged out and characterisations are somewhat unrealistic.
Narration is easy to listen to.

Started out good ended average

I really got into this up until about 75% through, when you start to see what's unfolding. could have been really good, just wasn't a fan of the ending . could be a good movie/show

Different

It held my suspense and I had to listen eagerly to hear the conclusion. I did pick up on the “mushrooms” and thought when I heard it that it had something to do with it. Great story

One to miss

I quite like this author (Sarah Denzil), but this one wasn’t great for me at all. Sarah is my “go to” writer for when I need something that can quiet my ADHD brain while doing mundane tasks or just need something easy enough to entertain my mind long enough to take a bit of a break. I still absolutely love so many of her stories, but this one was a struggle instead of a reprieve. The first half was okay enough, but as I got closer towards the end in the second half, it just lost me. Because my brain is weird, I have to finish listening to the end lol, but I’d get so lost that I had to rewind so many times and even then the last
2-3 hours were tedious and I just let the last hour play in my ears set at a higher speed and accepting that my confusion would win. I would not recommend this book to anyone, but I absolutely would recommend opting for a different Sarah Denzil book as her story telling is genuinely quite good.
