About this listen

"A proper twisty thriller."—Sarah Pinborough

A stranger has infiltrated your family…and now he’s taking over.

Paul’s just here to help, or so he claims—sent by a charity for vulnerable people to do odd jobs for elderly widow Gwen. But for Gwen’s daughter Connie, there’s just something about Paul that rings alarm bells from day one. He’s a little too kind, a little too involved…Worse still, Gwen seems to have fallen under his spell.

The last thing Connie wants is a stranger meddling in the safe routine she’s built around Gwen. She loves being the one Gwen turns to for cooking, cleaning and company. But the more Paul visits, the more Gwen is relying on him. By the time he conveniently finds himself between homes and has no choice but to move in, Connie is certain he’s trying to push her out completely.

It’s her word against his, though, and as her attempts to unmask him become ever more desperate she’s not the only one left wondering if she’s lost her grip on reality. But when events start spiralling rapidly out of her control, should Connie wage all-out war on Paul and risk losing Gwen forever—or has that been his plan all along?

Critic Reviews

“Though not yet a household name, Marrs is an incredibly talented storyteller with a built-in audience who knows what he can do. When unfamiliar readers get their hands on this one, they’ll want more.”Booklist

“I inhaled this book. A novel of second guesses, of mistrustful characters and downright terrifying ones. An absolute ride of a thriller. I loved it.”—L. V. Matthews, author of The Twins and The Silent Waters

Loved it……but

I really enjoyed the story, but the narrator's voice and accents were a bit annoying.

The narrator was awful, The story was quite good however totally unbelievable. I forced myself to listen to the end as I hate wasting money.

My least fav from John.

I LOVE John Marrs but this has to be my least fav. I was just so frustrated. Reminded me of the Housemaid with the same frustration.

Go read one of his others.

Another great dark, twisty thriller

John Marrs does it again with an intense thriller that keeps you guessing.
The story centres around Connie, her elderly mother Gwen and John, a volunteer handyman who seems very shady.
John Marr does a great job creating an unsettling atmosphere right from the start, and just when you think you have it worked out, a huge plot twist is revealed at half way point. From here on, we're taken on an edge of your seat cat and mouse roller coaster ride, that's hard to jump off.
The character and story development is fantastic and in typical John Marr style, it's not for the faint hearted. Absolutely loved it!
The narration by Elizabeth Knowelden and Steve West was superb.
I regret the same can't be said for Soneela Nankani. I found her narration irritating with her loud and silly sing-song voice. I had to speed through the chapters she read. Perhaps she's better suited to narrating children's books as her reading was way too cringe for what is supposed to be a serious, psychological thriller.
