Publisher's Summary
This is the disturbing tale of the dual personality of Dr. Jekyll, a physician. A generous and philanthropic man, he is preoccupied with the problems of good and evil, and with the possibility of separating them into distinct personalities. He develops a drug that transforms him into the demonic Mr. Hyde, in whose person he exhausts all the latent evil in his nature. He also creates an antidote that will restore him to his respectable existence as Dr. Jekyll. Gradually, however, the unmitigated evil of his darker self predominates until finally he performs an atrocious murder. His saner self determines to curtail these alternations of personality, but he discovers that he is losing control over his transformations and that he slips with increasing frequency into the world of evil. Finally, unable to procure one of the ingredients for the mixture of redemption, and on the verge of being discovered, he commits suicide.
Stark, skillfully woven, this fascinating novel explores the curious turnings of human character through the strange case of Dr. Jekyll, a kindly scientist who by night takes on his stunted, evil self, Mr. Hyde. Anticipating modern psychology, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a brilliantly original study of man's dual nature as well as an immortal tale of suspense and terror.
This tale has lost none of its ability to shock. Its realistic police-style narrative chillingly relates Dr. Jekyll’s desperation as Hyde gains control of his soul - and gives voice to our own fears of the violence and evil within us.
Critic Reviews
“The theme of human duality…is nowhere presented with more force and originality….[T]he story reveals Stevenson’s understanding of human nature and his mastery of English prose.” (Masterpieces of World Literature)

A horror classic
Imagine being able to read/listen to this story without spoilers. But its age and popularity prevents that. Jekyll and Hyde are a part of general modern culture now- familiar even to those who have never read the book. I was one of those people until now. Once you get past the Victorian language and turn of phrase, it’s an interesting and inventive story about human nature and morals.

A+ Performance
This wonderfully compact, thought provoking and unnervingly familiar story was made better by a masterful performance by the narrator Martin Jarvis. I will listen again and again and again.

Wonderfully read
This is always a good read and the narrator really brings out the ugliness of Hyde and the distress of Jekyll. If you're new to classic horror this is the one to start with, it's short, there aren't too many characters and you can get used to the slow pace and the focus on emotions and relationships and the horror of soul that most classic horror stories like this are full of.

A classic tale
I loved the narration of Martin Jarvis, it added to the story and his different characters made this easy to listen to.

Probably advanced for its time but now very dated
The psychology was interesting but for modern times, highly contrived and stereotyped and overly simplistic. Beautifully written and well-narrated but there plenty of better literature to listen to.

Strong performance, shows its age.
I love to read books that helped define genres, it helps me appreciate where tropes come from. But sometimes books that were something special in their age, just aren't that much fun.

Story a bit thin
Was narrated well and was easy to follow. But I find with a lot of older books, the language was a bit bloated and outdated. The story itself was very compact and the book (audiobook) felt longer than necessary given how little actually happened.

Worthy of its status!
A totally enjoyable experience. A great story, well performed. Only a short tale and one that is worth your time.
