About this listen
Walt Disney never wrote his memoir, but this book could be considered his autobiography.
In 1955, Walt gave a series of interviews to Pete Martin to be printed in multiple articles in the Saturday Evening Post. Much of that material formed the basis of this book, which was published in 1957.
Walt's daughter Diane was present during those interview sessions. She acknowledged in a later edition of the book that she is not the author. "It is Pete Martin's book, and my dad's story," she wrote, further noting this book was "one of the first biographies of my dad."
She was named as the author and Martin wrote the book from her perspective so that the Saturday Evening Post could pay her and her sister, rather than Walt. He wanted to give his daughters money to help them start their adult lives, but his funds were committed to his business.
As you'll hear in this audiobook, Walt found resourceful ways to earn money even in his youth.
The warm reminiscences present Walt as a creative and energetic business person and loving family man. His story includes fascinating details about animation, his cartoon characters and films, the movie and TV industries, and technological processes he invented.
He partnered with his devoted brother Roy, who managed the financial aspects of the company. Reversals of fortune occurred many times in their lives, yet they continued to dream bigger dreams and pursue them.
The Story of Walt Disney comes to audio for the first time in celebration of the 120th anniversary of Walt Disney's birth.

Not what I expected but…..
I have read a number of books on Walt Disney from many standpoints, good and bad. This was different as it tried to be told from a more personal, ‘family’ viewpoint. The excessive, but I guess, necessary use of ‘my father’ clearly indicated this.
Many of the stories I had read before, but there were several new anecdotes, and even the well-known episodes were told from a more personal (and one-sided) viewpoint, That one-sided viewpoint was in no way an issue and as we all know from personal family experiences, is totally acceptable.
The book is differentiated from most biographies in that is has not been amended from when it was written, and finishes while the great man was very much still alive and creating, and Disneyland was still in its infancy.
If you are a fan of Walt, as I am, this is a must read (or listen) as it not so much tells a new story, but fills in a lot of gaps, and overlaps your existing knowledge adding more depth along the way.
Highly recommended.
