About this listen

When creatures that lurk in the dark dare to venture out into the world, lives are changed forever.

Conrad lives a quiet rural life with his parents in the Northlands. During one fated night, his world is turned on its head, as nightmares become reality. While his Northlands blood cries out for revenge, Conrad’s head tells him surviving is the best he can do.

Rescued by a motley band of mercenaries, Conrad embarks on a life he could barely have imagined. As new challenges, friends, and enemies present themselves, Conrad knows that one day he will have to face the evil that so altered his life, and when that day comes, he must be ready.

Great story.

I love Duncan M Hamilton and the world he’s created with the wolf of the north and dragon slayer trilogies, they’re fantastic. However, I feel a significant component to their quality was the narration by Simon Vance. This series has a different narrator who really doesn’t capture the quality of writing in the way Simon Vance does. I sincerely hope the series is somehow re-released with Simon’s narration as it would feel like a new series. Otherwise it’s worth the read.

From cattle counting to blood debt

Same world as Wolf of the North and as enjoyable a story as Hamilton usually delivers - you go (and want to go) on an adventure with our main character who from the very start is just trying to survive when his simple world is turned upside down and he joins a band of mercenaries. There are enough tidbits to keep you intrigued about what the evil forces are and why they are reawakened - and what our main character Conrad has to do with it all. In the midst of it there is squire school and the usual fun that comes with that. The only thing that bothered me a little was the lack of strong connection with the main character and his name - Conrad? Especially when comparing it with the other characters in the book it was just a bit out of place and he needs a bit more oomph. Great narration

Impressive story poorly performed

Hamilton's writing continues to impress and entertain, but this narration simply fails to meet the same standard. John Lewis is inconsistent and far from the mark with his portrayals of characters and their accents. Lee has a pleasant enough voice for general descriptions, but his characters have totally different voices and accents from one chapter to the next, and markedly different accents compared to other characters from the same region. The incongruities are more than enough to have a significant and entirely detrimental effect on the potential experience.

Underwhelmed

I wanted to love this book as I’m a big fan of the Dragonslayer series but I was left wondering if this was written by the same author. This is amateurish .
The narrator is positively jarring and atrocious with different accents. Frustrating and monotonous storyline with no depth .
