About this listen

Louis Lallemant (1578 - 1635) was a French Jesuit who entered the order in 1605. He was ordained and taught philosophy at a number of Jesuit colleges until 1622 when he was made master of novices for four years. He then became professor of theology in Paris. In 1628 he was appointed director of tertians, being responsible for the final year of formation for close to 60 Jesuits. After three years at this post he died.

Lallemant expected of others what he did personally. He set high ideals for his disciples and was critical of those who were so busy with work and study that they did not pray.

He is known today chiefly for this work, “Doctrine Spirituelle”, a collection of his maxims and instructions collected by Fr. Jean Rigoleuc, one of his disciples, which thoroughly details his spiritual method. This work is translated by Fr. Frederick William Faber C.O. (1814 - 1863), a noted English hymn writer and theologian.
