About this listen

New York Times bestselling author and BookTok sensation Carissa Broadbent returns with a brand new novel in the Crowns of Nyaxia series, Songbird and the Heart of Stone, where A Court of Thorns and Roses meets Dante's Inferno, in an epic fantasy romance of love and treachery between mortals and gods.

Mische lost everything when she was forcibly Turned into a vampire—her home, her humanity, and most devastating of all, the love of the sun god to whom she had devoted her life. Now, sentenced to death for murdering the vampire prince who turned her, redemption feels impossible.

But when Mische is saved by Asar, the bastard prince of the House of Shadow with a past as brutal as his scars, she's forced into a mission worse than execution: a journey to the underworld to resurrect the god of death himself.

Yet, Mische's punishment may be the key to her salvation. In a secret meeting, her sun god commands her to help Asar in his mission, only to betray him… by killing the god of death.

Mische and Asar must travel the treacherous path to the underworld, facing trials, beasts, and the vengeful ghosts of their pasts. Yet, most dangerous of all is the alluring call of the darkness—and her forbidden attraction to Asar, a burgeoning bond that risks invoking the wrath of gods.

As her betrayal looms, the underworld closes in, and angry gods are growing restless. Mische will be forced to choose between the redemption of the sun or the damnation of the darkness.

what was this?

This is a fav author. but I'm not sure what happened here. The dialogue just seems like endless nervous prattle ( I slowed the voice pace no improvement) - I zoned out so many times theres no tension and no suspense definitely no chemistry with MMC. The voice choice was not right for FMC Mische to Carry audio book made her sound neurotic, agitated and on speed & unbearable to listen too. The other voices spoken were great. I now understand the book reviews. I love this authors work too much to not come back for the next book. A well edited best-seller, still need to be interesting.

Best thing is the cliffhanger - that is a chef kiss move.

In a vampire world but not a lot of vampire action

While this is a great story set in a vampire world I wouldn’t say it’s a vampire book. I think it missed a lot of the usual vampire thrills you normally get in a book. The ending is good but it’s not my favourite book in the series. The first two books outshine this one! Still worth a read though.

Death is not always an end result

Not as good as the first books in this series and very much the same plot.

Slow burn but a great story overall

Not sure if I would have enjoyed this more in a book rather than audio, as it felt like it took a long time to get going but the last quarter in particular reminded me why Carissa Broadbent rapidly became one of my favourite authors.

I found it hard to relate to Misha’s faith and denial and religious fervour in general which probably didn’t help, and the romance was sort of nonexistent then suddenly there, but despite that it did somehow still feel real once it got going and the ending is truly excellent which pushed it up to 4 stars for me.

Mixed feelings

It was such a struggle to finish this. I was so excited to read this book as I had loved the first two parts, but this was such a drag. I skipped so many chapters and had to force myself to reach the last part.
