An odd listen but fun
You can tell a lot of work went into this as specifically an audiobook and isn’t just a book being read. Big recommend from me to big fans of the series, helps if you’ve read/listened to all the other books.

Worth listening to just for the skeleton's history
I like the storyline and reintroduction of Skulduggery Pleasant. The reveal is slow but not boring. The voice actors do well to collaborate but there are times I get put off by the change of pace from archivist to archivist. That can't be helped tho. Since the beginning, I've always thought that Skulduggery let go of his family after a disaster of sorts and left the memories and identity of the man he once was all behind him. It's interesting to see how, even back then, Skulduggery was still Skulduggery. I wonder how he even became Skulduggery in the first place. What was he like as a child amongst all these powerful and wacky siblings. And his parents... yikes. Anyway, that's need to know, right?
Thank you Derek for this brief but delightful escape from the boring lockdown hell most of us are subject to. I always want more.
PS. Thank the faceless that Val is back out of her shell.

A bit disappointing, but it gets better at the end
I LOVE Derek Landy. His characters are three dimensional, his stories are twisty and his world building is amazeballs. I inhale everything he writes and he normally gets an automatic 5 stars from me. But this book isn’t like the others. It’s basically a synopsis of the Skulduggery world so far, interspersed with the story of his nutso family. Unfortunately the synopsis part is essentially a list of names of people and a list of ‘this happened, then this happened, then this happened etc. It’s missing the heart that his stories normally have, and also because so much happens so quickly I couldn’t keep track of everything, even though I’ve read them all. After a while it’s just a blur.
That said, it does pick up in the second half so if you can get through to the end, it is worth it. The ending is really good. The narration was a bit bleh. When they were reading the transcripts, it would have been better if it was acted by the characters themselves. They did it a bit early on, so why did they stop? Covid maybe? Yeah, let’s blame covid. Overall, it’s worth a look, but I think the synopsis part would be better as an ebook, one that you could actually use as a reference guide, like the archivists suggest. One final warning- the synopsis includes the latest story, which has been released as a book I think, but not an audiobook yet. It’s full of spoilers. Hopefully I will have repressed them by the time it comes out. I knew I should have stopped listening at this point, but I couldn’t. It’s Derek Landy, you know?
