About this listen
Constance Campbell, the duchess of Kilmaine, once believed that all she needed in life was a duke. But everything unraveled when she realized her perfect husband was a perfect monster. Now broken beyond repair, she hides her misery behind a perfect society mask...even from her childhood friend Alec.
Dr. Alec McGuiness reluctantly finds himself back in Scotland and checking up on the only woman to ever get under his skin, Connie. After she spurned him many years ago, he knows his humble life as a doctor could never be enough for her. But when the duke of Kilmaine is murdered in cold blood, with Connie sleeping right next to him in bed, Alec knows he must protect Connie at all costs from those who would frame her for the duke's murder.
Now on the run, Connie feels a freedom she only ever dreamed about before and an unexpected attraction to the man who is keeping her safe. But even if they can win her freedom and clear her name, could she ever open her heart up to someone again?
Contains mature themes.

Entertaining
Great storyline, intriguing and not overdone. Enjoyed it very much and recommend to others who like period romance. A little different from the normal stuff

Another great story
The continued flow of this series is very enjoyable. About the only criticism is that in the previous books I don’t remember Alec having a Scottish accent.

Loved it
I love Maddison Michaels and this book was no exception. The story sucks you in from the beginning and Michaels effortlessly creates a variety of characters and plot lines. Narration was excellent as well. 5/5

A great series so far
I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the machinations, adventures and intrigue as I journey through the books in this series to date. Each story is uniquely different and can be read ‘standalone’, as each subtlety feeds into the next but doesn’t necessitate an awareness of current love interests’ involvement in past storylines. I feel there’s more to come..or at least a book 4 with Alex’s brother’s love story - I hope! The narration is consistently excellent and I recommend this book and the entire series.

A romance and a murder mystery
This was a great story, There were a few moments when the inner dialogue of the main characters was a bit long winded, but in saying that it didn't affect the stories good points. My heart went out to Connie and there were a few moments towards the end where the brotherly love got me in the feels. I knew the murderer was hard to pick so I tried looking out the box, considered the suspect fleetingly then dismissed them all together. There was twists and turns that kept me guessing. I also understand Connies draw to Alex he's her protector a safe place and her desire to feel tenderness and passion was no surprise to me at all.
