Publisher's Summary
'A fast-paced carnival of setbacks and skullduggery that reminds me of... me! Charming from the first twist to the last' Scott Lynch, author of THE LIES OF LOCKE LAMORA
The first in an extraordinary new fantasy epic, perfect for fans of Nicholas Eames and James Islington!
Lukan Gardova is a cardsharp, academy dropout, and - thanks to a duel that ended badly - the disgraced heir to an ancient noble house. His life consists of cheap wine, rigged card games and wondering how he might win back the life he threw away.
When Lukan discovers that his estranged father has been murdered in strange circumstances, he finds fresh purpose. Deprived of his chance to make amends for his mistakes, he vows to unravel the mystery behind his father's death.
His search for answers leads him to Saphrona, fabled city of merchant princes, where anything can be bought if one has the coin. Lukan only seeks the truth, but instead he finds danger and secrets in every shadow.
For in Saphrona, everything has a price - and the price of truth is the deadliest of all.

Outstanding Novel
This is an extremely well done introduction to what will undoubtedly be a great fantasy series.
Story: The story had a great blend of intrigue, mystery, suspense and action. The plot was nicely paced, it always keeps you listening and doesn't drag out scenes longer than they needed to be
I really liked that the MC had to try and work through problems to find solutions rather than them being handed to him.
Characters: Both the main and secondary characters were amazingly built. There's a quite a lot of secondary characters and I thought they all were developed quite nicely (with one or two exceptions). This will definitely be developed in future books.
Worldbuilding: The world is big and intriguing with lost civilisations and ancient magic. Lots to build on here in future books.
My only criticism is that the narrator sometimes struggles to do distinctive voices for women.

Well executed fantasy romp
The narrator is a bit of a double edged sword, he's very good as Lucan and Flea but not very good as anyone else. Honestly a fantastic story but it never really struck home for me until late in the book. The dialogue just isn't that great apart from Flea and Lucan's banter. Overall really good. Definitely recommend.

The protagonist doesn’t make sense to me
The protagonist was a weird one, there was just something about his character that was odd that just didn’t make sense to me both motivationally and the company he kept. His decisions, the amount of times close calls were not actually close at all. I want to be less harsh but it broke the whole story for me. The story itself was entertaining but the protagonist…I just can’t.
