Publisher's Summary
Summer 1924: On the eve of a glittering society party, by the lake of a grand English country house, a young poet takes his life. The only witnesses, sisters Hannah and Emmeline Hartford, will never speak to each other again.
Winter 1999: Grace Bradley, 98, one-time housemaid of Riverton Manor, is visited by a young director making a film about the poet's suicide. Ghosts awaken and memories, long consigned to the dark reaches of Grace's mind, begin to sneak back through the cracks. A shocking secret threatens to emerge; something history has forgotten but Grace never could.
Set as the war-shattered Edwardian summer surrenders to the decadent 20s, The Shifting Fog is a thrilling mystery and a compelling love story.
An alternate title for this novel is The House at Riverton.

Of all Kate's books I have enjoyed this one the most. I laughed, I cried, I gasped and I didn't predict the end. Great book

Loved it!
This book kept me interested to the very end. Beautifully written and read. Set in the early 20th century, but told by Grace looking back at the end of her life to the events that changed the world forever. The story is fiction but the settings and background are historical fact. Thank you so much and can't wait for more.

Exquisite detail & beautiful performance
A beautiful in-depth story about life & secrets from a ladies maid’s point of view, performance was lovely. The story could have explored a few of the secrets further & the outcome of their revelations. Apart from that, a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

Misleading title
I enjoyed listening to this audio book, I have read the hard copy of Riverton house and thought that this was a different book. I admit that I didn't read all the details and later realised that this book is the same but with a different title.
Why would it have multiple titles? I think that this is misleading. But I learned my lesson.
Overall I enjoyed it.

Upstairs/Downstairs revisited
Although I enjoyed The Shifting Fog, I prefer the other books I have read by Kate Morton, which are, in my opinion, more riveting and full of suspense.
I found the fact, that when reading, no mention was made of the end of a chapter, and this made it difficult to read a chapter at a time.
This book would appeal to anyone who is interested in life at the beginning of the 20th century; the background and characters are believable and well delineated. An enjoyable read!
