A young reporter must come to terms with his past - and present - while investigating the murder of a man he believes could be his father.

Joe Talbert, Jr. has never once met his namesake. Now out of college, a cub reporter for the Associated Press in Minneapolis, he stumbles across a story describing the murder of a man named Joseph Talbert in a small town in southern Minnesota.

Full of curiosity about whether this man might be his father, Joe is shocked to find that none of the town's residents have much to say about the dead man - other than that his death was long overdue. Joe discovers that the dead man was a loathsome lowlife who cheated his neighbors, threatened his daughter, and squandered his wife's inheritance after she, too, passed away - an inheritance that may now be Joe's.

Mired in uncertainty and plagued by his own devastated relationship with his mother, who is seeking get back into her son's life, Joe must put together the missing pieces of his family history - before his quest for discovery threatens to put him in a grave of his own.

Another amazing Eskens read!

Just like all Allen Eskens other books, this one is again fantastic. The characters are enjoyable, the story has so many twists and turns that just keep coming right up until the end, and the way each book ties together is just icing on the cake. And to cap it all off, the narration is perfect. The voices suit the characters and are all believable.

There were only two negatives to this title. First, the volume is quite low. I had to have the volume in my car cranked right up to maximum to hear it. The second was the main chatacter's twisted view of guilt and ethics. A woman takes advantage of him while he is concussed and barely lucid, yet he never defends himself against accusations of having cheated and even blames himself and says he deserves what happens as a consequence. I just couldn't get past these messed up views and unrealistic reactions enough to give the story a perfect score, but the rest of it was still amazing!

Excellent all round

Firstly the narrator is excellent. A great narrator who can articulate the different characters in unique and recognisable ways is like gold dust. The story is a classic Eskins tale complete with plot reversals, twists and turns and plenty of surprises. Overall a terrific listen.
