About this listen
Winner of the Costa First Novel Award 2018
A brilliantly original high-concept murder mystery from a fantastic new talent: Gosford Park meets Inception by way of Agatha Christie.
'Somebody's going to be murdered at the ball tonight. It won't appear to be a murder, and so the murderer won't be caught. Rectify that injustice and I'll show you the way out.'
It is meant to be a celebration, but it ends in tragedy. As fireworks explode overhead, Evelyn Hardcastle, the young and beautiful daughter of the house, is killed. But Evelyn will not die just once. Until Aiden - one of the guests summoned to Blackheath for the party - can solve her murder, the day will repeat itself over and over again. Every time ending with the fateful pistol shot.
The only way to break this cycle is to identify the killer. But each time the day begins again, Aiden wakes in the body of a different guest. And someone is determined to prevent him ever escaping Blackheath....

Very Twisty Sci-Fi Murder Mystery
Going in, I was hoping the ‘Groundhog Day’ element would be a background conceit to enable an innovative take on a murder mystery, however exploration (and explanation) of the body-swapping proved an interesting and fundamental component of the story. Thankfully, even when it did distract from the main case, it added thrills and ultimately proved necessary to solving the whole thing!
By ‘Day 3’, I was hooked and — after making every effort to pay attention — enjoyed how this very twisty story exploited every opportunity it created for itself.
The final solution to the murder was surprising and overall satisfying, though the end of main character’s story was perhaps more moralistic than was necessary.

Fantastic
I loved this from begging to end. With all the twists it kept me enthralled. It was so clever, suspenseful and intriguing. The narrator was outstanding.

interesting enough
Struggled to complete. Slow and winding; even confusing at times. My attention waned regularly. I am still not sure i understood it all. The narrater did well but it was hard to differentiate between some character voices and they were so similarly narrated.

Absolute Satisfaction
I had to re-listen to some parts, but this to have been the most satisfying who dunnit I've ever had the pleasure if experiencing.
The expertly crafted dark twists and misdirection kept me guessing the whole book. I felt like I was really within the chorus mentioned towards the end. Now I can only lose myself to guess about the event that are sure to transpire after the Book closes.
lovely work.

A gem!
Stuart Turton wastes no words in writing this book. It is cleverly written and the story is interesting. A crime mystery involving time loops and a Groundhog Day premise, the reader is not left disappointed. The narration is fantastic and keeps you involved with the multi-character twists and turns throughout.

Unique and well thought out mystery
This book has a unique almost fantasy like aspect to it which is a bit different for mystery books and I think it’s one of the best books I’ve read😬
