About this listen

Yuwonderie's seven founding families have lorded it over their district for a century, growing ever more rich and powerful.

But now—in startling circumstances—one of their own is found dead in a ditch and homicide detectives Ivan Lucic and Nell Buchanan are sent to investigate.

Could the murder be connected to the execution of the victim's friend thirty years ago—another member of The Seven—or even to the long-forgotten story of a servant girl on the brink of the Great War?

What are the secrets The Seven are so desperate to keep hidden?

With the killer still on the loose and events spiraling out of control, the closer Ivan and Nell get to discovering the truth, the more dangerous their investigation becomes. Can they crack the case before more people die?

A body, seven controlling families & unraveling family empires.

Typical scenario of the big rich guys lauding it over the smaller battlers. Only this time the tables are turned, in an unusual & unexpected way.

Everything starts to change when a body is found. Suddenly, the world of the Seven controlling families is turned upside down.

Sleepless

Narration was well done without being overly dramatic.
Lives up to if not better than the author’s previous works.
Enjoyed the historical aspects.

Loved it!

What a fantastic story set in a very familiar part of the Riverina with references to towns, landscapes, criminal activity & organizations that were part of my youth. Loved the creation of a town community, fictional yet so believable. Had me intrigued & guessing until the end. Highly recommend this Chris Hammer book!

A classic ‘who dun it’ set in rural Australia across three different generations.

The author has a very unique style of writing which I really enjoy. A strong crime fiction writer but who sets his stories in rural Australia interspersed with Australian history.

Believable characters

The author builds very believable characters who I can imagine meeting in everyday Australia. The storylines, however, seemed a little too far-fetched in my opinion. I guess my life is too humdrum to identify with the dramatics.
Even so, it was easy listening and intricate in its weaving. Worth a read.
