About this listen
Winner of the 2015 CWA Endeavour Dagger for Historical Fiction.
London, 1654. Oliver Cromwell is at the height of his power and has declared himself Lord Protector. Yet he has many enemies at home and abroad. London is a complex web of spies and merchants, priests and soldiers, exiles and assassins.
One of the web's most fearsome spiders is Damian Seeker, agent of the Lord Protector. No one knows where Seeker comes from, who his family is, or even his real name. All that is known of him for certain is that he is utterly loyal to Cromwell and that nothing can be long hidden from him. In the city, coffeehouses are springing up, fashionable places where men may meet to plot and gossip. Suddenly they are ringing with news of a murder.
John Winter, hero of Cromwell's all-powerful army, is dead, and lawyer Elias Ellingworth is found standing over the bleeding body, clutching a knife. Yet despite the damning evidence, Seeker is not convinced of Ellingworth's guilt. He will stop at nothing to bring the killer to justice - and Seeker knows better than any man where to search.

A really good story
At first I was put off my the somber tone of the reader but very quickly became engrossed and felt the readers voice was perfect for the setting and story. It is a great read and I have now purchased the full set. A real fan.

Slow Start, Excellent Novel
This is a period of history I know little about. After a few chapters I was totally engrossed. The detailed research is evident, and enjoyable, but it is the complexity of the characters that I loved. Rich in detail, plot and drama.

So glad I stuck with this one!
At first I found the narrator's style quite offputting, though his voice is very easy to listen to. But after a few chapters I grew accustomed to his accent and by the end, I felt he had been a perfect choice to read this book.
The story itself also took a while to draw me in but it was a rewarding "read" with fascinating insights into an historical period rarely depicted in television series or movies. Why deal with the civil war or its aftermath when yet another in the interminable stream of Tudor dramas can be churned out.
I will definitely be reading more in this series. TV producers take note - this would make a riveting 6 part drama and may I suggest Richard Armitage for the role of Damien Seeker.

And the Oscar for
Best over acting goes to the narrator that makes this book a disaster. Made four chapters and had to stop. Even the story is mind numbingly slow and boring. 0 stars
