About this listen
Grieving over the loss of her family and feeling like her life is unraveling, Lindsey McDermott quits her job, gets a puppy, and retreats to her grandparents' home in the Texas Hill Country. She spends her solitary days walking childhood trails and reminiscing, trying to reconcile the conflict within her as she struggles with survivor's guilt.
After the death of her husband, Hannah Larson needs a change. At the suggestion of her mother-in-law - and against her better judgment - she and her son Jack move to tiny Utopia and into her husband's grandmother's house.
When Jack and Lindsey form an unlikely friendship, Hannah reluctantly joins them and the three spend the summer swimming and healing as laughter eventually replaces tears. After Jack goes back to school, Hannah assumes their summer fun is over. Instead, Lindsey continues to come around and now - as they find themselves alone - Hannah realizes just how close they've become. Soon, she finds herself struggling with her feelings as their friendship threatens to shift into something much deeper...something she fears she won't be able to fight. Something she fears she won't want to fight.
A story of grief and healing...a story of love.

Brilliant
Read it once and have listened to it a few times now. Always a pleasure to listen to anything narrated by Abby Craden - especially her lesbian romances. She has such a way with voicing the different characters and her voice is just golden.
Gerri Hill books are always full of rich stories and depth-filled characters, only issue I take with some of them is that the end comes just as the character get together, but I can't even complain about that with this one!
A great book overall! Recommended

Beautiful love story
Im currently on a Gerri Hill and Abby Craden binge. This story was beautifully written. Two seperate tragedies and two people not really looking for love but finding it in the most beautiful environment.
Gerri hill has an amazing gift when it comes to angst. In this particular story I wasn't sure I was going to buy into the Hannah's background. I thought that it would be impossible for me to believe that her son Jack would accept her being in a same sex relationship. But I was pleasantly surprised with how Gerri Hill steered the story organically into that romantic direction. When the two finally got together and realised what it would mean for Jack, I felt torn as well and was on edge wondering how the story would resolve itself. I loved the character development of Lindsey who wasn't interested in making any friends or connections but found a unique affinity with Jack. The romantic relationship that evolved afterwards was refreshing and believable.
As with most Gerri hill novels Im always left wanting more. I would love to have had more of Hannah, Jack and Lindsey being together as a family. These epilogues are not enough for me. :)
Abby Craden is a flawless narrator and I will continue to devour all of her performances!

Endearing
I wasn't expecting the relationship between the boy and one of the MCs, but it really added quite a lot of depth to the story and was super endearing. I found myself really enjoying the development of that bond, it was well written and superbly acted by Abby. A great segue into the ensuing relationship between the two women. Also loved the level of detail in describing the landscape, Gerri has a wonderful eye for detail that really contributes to the atmosphere. Wonderful!

A pleasant read that wasn't formula so great.
A pleasant story that didn't follow the regular formula so it was quite refreshing. Mostly realistic character portrayal.
