Tell me what it's like. The race.
"What it's like is a battle. A mess of horses and men and blood. The fastest and strongest of what is left from two weeks of preparation on the sand. It's the surf in your face, the deadly magic of November on your skin, the Scorpio drums in the place of your heartbeat. It's speed, if you're lucky. It's life and it's death or it's both, and there's nothing like it.”
Why I waited so long to read this book, is beyond me, and I berate myself for it. It is breath taking, heart warming, and beautiful. A new favourite!
Stiefvater is a genius with words. She pulls at your heart threads, binding you to her characters with every word, every verbal and non-verbal exchange, every fear and longing made bare. This connection goes beyond the main characters, to the island of Thisby itself, which is dark and terrifying, yet beautiful. Stiefvater allows her readers to experience the love, dreams and fears the islanders have for their home, and their powerful and deadly water horses, the capall uisce - who are the true focus of this gripping and spellbinding tale. As I read, Thisby began to feel like home. It was so vividly written. I could smell the rain and ocean, feel the sand between my toes, and taste the blood and salt. And the romance was wonderfully slow, each moment between the characters a treasure. This novel made me crave slow burns, to reignite the feeling that comes with latching onto every exchange, every look, every thought, every little loving gesture.

Loved it!
I wish there was more of it! I totally admit I just sat and got lost in the story.
