SOME THREATS ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR ...

Longlisted, Best Adult Novel, Davitt Awards

The first drops start to fall when Quinn spies the body. With no reception and nothing but an empty road for miles, does she stop to help or keep driving to safety?

Back at the iconic country pub where Quinn works, Andrea is sandbagging the place in preparation for heavy rains. Alone with her sleeping son in the back room, she reluctantly lets a biker in to wait out the storm.

Out on the wet roads, tensions arise among four backpackers on their way to Darwin. They haven’t prepared for this kind of weather and the flooding isn’t the only threat on the horizon …

Chilling, tense and twisted, this compulsive thriller will send adrenaline coursing through your veins.

Critic Reviews

‘A sunny outback road trip with two friendly young couples: what could possibly go wrong? The Rush flips the trope with sudden floods, then piles on the threats for its women heroes – stranded far from home, isolated and vulnerable … not just to flooded creeks and cut off roads, but to the deadly games of a predator. Like a river in full flood, Michelle Prak’s heart-pounding debut thriller sweeps the reader along through masterful twists all the way to its shattering ending.’ (Greg Woodland, author of The Night Whistler)

The Rush is a wild ride through the remote outback during an extreme weather event. Some threats aren’t obvious at first glance, but Andrea, Mark, Quinn, Scott, Livia, Hayley, and Joost are all on a collision course which will send shockwaves through the remote communities. Compelling drama in a backdrop of flooding, Michelle Prak takes the reader through flooded roads and washed-out generators and menacing strangers who come knocking in the dark. An utterly chilling read with an unexpected twist, this crime novel is hard to put down.’ (Vikki Petraitis, author of The Unbelieved)

‘Taut, unpredictable, terrifying; the uniquely Australian weather and landscape are both joyful and become an unwitting accomplice. Michelle Prak weaves such a suspenseful story that you might never want to be alone or isolated again.’ (Neela Janakiramanan, author of The Registrar)

Riveting read!

Loved this. The author paints such a wonderful picture of the harsh but beautiful Aussie interior. Characters are deep and relatable, and I found myself increasingly invested in their fates. The strands of the story are brilliantly woven together and it kept me guessing throughout. Great Aussie narrators too - recommend.

Decent

A decent storyline, waffles a bit in places. One of the characters was a bit too annoying and required fast forwarding at times.

Would make a great movie

Was a bit slow at the beginning but couldn’t stop listening as the story progressed and didn’t see the twist at the end coming which is always a great way the end. Would make a fantastic Australian Noir style movie

A page-turner, fast and tense

This is a great book! It's very fast paced, no time to get bored and no lingering on tiresome back stories. Despite that, the characters are still drawn enough for you to care what happens to them. The narration is great - perfect pace and tone from all actors. I loved that there's a non-native English character but they don't attempt the accent when she is narrating - bad accents always ruin books and I'm so glad they decided against it.
It's a great Australian thriller set in the outback as we don't often see it - drenched and flooded. Well worth the listen!!!

Very readable

Not a bad story. It was well narrated. Slight twist at the end. Woke in parts.

Stick with it, it's worth it!

Despite the slow start, the ending was wrapped up nicely with a surprise twist. I loved the local Australian outback setting and characters, a refreshing change to foreign accents.

I especially like any book that includes a dog as character!

Loved this

Tense thriller set in a claustrophobic stormy outback. A group of students venture on a road trip unaware of the danger that awaits. Vivid remote locations make you aware of the characters vulnerability - great twist too.

Not Bad

The Australian outback is now over-run by crime writers, but not all have managed to nail the Wolf Creek level of suspense. I found this one a bit slow and a preachy. It wasn't bad, but it didn't live up to the review hype.
