تتناول الرواية وقائع تاريخية حدثت في مصر وسوريا في النصف الأول من القرن التاسع عشر، وترتكز في ذكرها لهذه الأحداث على شخصيات محورية في ذلك العصر أمثال محمد علي باشا الكبير والي مصر وأول من أنشأ مصر التاريخية الحديثة، وإبراهيم باشا خليفته، والأمير بشير الشهابي أمير لبنان، وأمين بك أحد أمراء المماليك.

الرواية تقعُ في قرابة الثلاثمئة صفحة من الحجم المتوسط، تحكي قصة عن أحد المماليك الذين نجوا من مذبحة القلعة التى أجراها محمد علي والتى كان فيها ما يقارب ال أربعمائة مملوك ، وكيف هرب ذلك المملوك إلى الصحراء وكيف كانت حياته ، في الجانب الاخر يسرد المؤلف تشرد أسرته وكيف أن تم تجمع هذه الأسرة بطريقة أغرب إلى الخيال ، بسبب أسلوب الكاتب الذى يمتاز بالسهولة الواضحة والتوظيف الجيد للأحداث التاريخية.

تتميز هذهِ الروايةُ بجزالةِ اللفظ وروعةِ المعاني، والعاطفةِ الجياشة؛ التي تستدرّ الدمع لينسكبُ من محاجر العين.
