About this listen

This New York Times best seller was the inspiration for the first season of American Crime Story on FX, starring Cuba Gooding, Jr.; John Travolta; David Schwimmer; and Connie Britton.

The definitive account of the O. J. Simpson trial, The Run of His Life is a prodigious feat of reporting that could have been written only by the foremost legal journalist of our time. First published less than a year after the infamous verdict, Jeffrey Toobin's nonfiction masterpiece tells the whole story, from the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman to the ruthless gamesmanship behind the scenes of "the trial of the century". Rich in character, as propulsive as a legal thriller, this enduring narrative continues to shock and fascinate with its candid depiction of the human drama that upended American life.

Please note: This audiobook is a recording of the original 1996 edition of The Run of His Life. It does not include an Afterword added to the 2013 reissued edition.

Absolutely Riveting

This book is excellent. I kept finding excuses to go and listen too it. If you have any interest in the OJ case but don't know where to start, this is it.

Bare with the Narrator

I wasn't sure about this one at first. The narrator grated on me so much I considered returning the book. Bel Davis's voice is almost offensively American: it's nasal and he speaks with such a drawl it causes some words to be pronounced quite bizarrely ("loii-yerrs", "sha-peer-roww"). However, once you get a chapter or two in his voice is actually well suited to the text. There's a sleaziness about it that suits the LA legal setting, and his performance is strong. The text itself is excellent. Toobin has the advantage of insider knowledge (he reported on and witnessed the trial) but is able to offer a journalistic objectivity that couldn't be available from someone involved more personally. If you've seen the FX series and are wondering if the near 19-hour audiobook could offer anything more, I'd argue that it does and that it's the superior of the two. You learn more about the sheer weight of the evidence against O.J. Simpson, not to mention the ineptitude of the prosecution (which is mostly skipped over the FX series). Worth a listen.
