About this listen
Arlington National Cemetery is the largest military cemetery in the United States, and one of the most beautiful places in the world. The Road to Arlington: A Humble Journey is the story of a World War II and a Korean War veteran's journey to this hallowed ground.
John Gold was a quiet man who rarely spoke of his time spent in the military and less time about being a Purple Heart recipient and kamikaze survivor. His wish was for himself and his wife, Ann, to be interred together at Arlington National Cemetery, but he gave little other direction, leaving his son Jeff to make all the arrangements and decisions. What started out as a flawless event became complicated as the plans changed dramatically.
A rarely allowed change of burial date, the coordinating for five families to fly and travel together, and a last minute denial from a local US congressman to provide an American flag all provided Jeff with an education that is not found in any textbook or tour guide.
What started out with notes and journal entries and an idea to give his local funeral homes a step-by-step guide for the interment process for ANC quickly became so much more. With every fact and tidbit of information came what seemed to be 10 more.
The audiobook is a history of Arlington National Cemetery and the Arlington House including its residents, the descendants of George Washington, and its last resident, Robert E. Lee and family. Jeff tells the information he researched in story format with details and tips on the Arlington, Virginia, and Washington, DC area as well as travel suggestions.
Dr. Jeff Gold educates the listener with information not readily known unless you had the unfortunate honor of laying to rest a loved one with the other 400,000 honored souls at ANC. His years of travel experience to DC and ANC, along with detailed research and a rare interview of a married couple who served together as military funeral honor guards, give looks at things you may never imagine about the area and events that take place there on a daily basis.
Finally, Jeff talks about the emotions of attending a funeral at ANC and how to honor those who are spending eternity there with those including General Colin Powell, Medal of Honor recipient Audie Murphy, heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis, and President John F. Kennedy.
