About this listen
You can't rise from the ashes if you've never been burned.
When notorious mafia boss Danny Black and lethal assassin James Kelly join forces to hunt down an elusive mutual nemesis who threatens to destroy them both and take control of their city, they know they will be entering a deadly game. A game they must win if they are ever going to live in peace with the women they love away from crime, corruption, and death.
But peace is an illusion, love is a daily torment, and death will always follow them.
As power starts to slip from their grasp, enemies reemerge, and old personal demons return to haunt them both, they finally accept they can never leave their world if they want to stay alive. So they need to protect it at all costs. No matter the consequences. No matter the losses. No matter the pain. They must make choices no men should make. Kill more ruthlessly, love more fiercely, and hate with more rage than ever before.
They're capable. Ready.
But nothing prepares them for the secrets they uncover and the betrayals they face. Or the personal sacrifices they must make to rise again.
Two men.
One goal.
No mercy.
This is The Rising.

Wow
This book was a great read with drama at every turn, just when they think they find peace something else hits. Though for me the constant fighting and back and forth with emotions was overwhelming. But a great read.
Narration was awesome.

This is not a mafia romance.
This is bumbling incompetence at its best. When I read a mafia romance, I want dark, I want danger, and I want a quick-witted intelligence that can find a way to get what they want. This book did not have that. James and Danny couldn't find their way out of a wet paper bag because they would spend all that time fighting with their wives and not letting them help.
The only clues they got were handed to them. The only breakthrough they got was because the enemy was getting angry and making mistakes. The only person in the group who was capable of investigating was an ex-cop-top-of-her-class woman but they didn’t want her to join in because she is a woman, and the one time they do let her in she actually helps. The internalised misogyny within this book is astounding.
I'm from a world where a man should not complete a woman. Where You should fix yourself before embarking on an intense level of relationship. But even Beau's psychiatrist asked her if she's found someone to fix her yet??
As for Rose's pregnancy- when a Dr prescribes bed rest, that means bed rest! Not just ducking downstairs to lie on the lounger. Honey, you don't get to move.
The only thing that kept me going through this book was the narrators. These guys are amazing, especially when the storyline is lacking. The amount of emotion they can pack into the book is brilliant. Otherwise, I considered dnf'ing at least twice, because the storyline was not moving anywhere.
I hope that Brad and Pearl's book is better but so far even the lead up for that just reads as more misogyny. I'm Tapping out here guys, I'm done.
