About this listen

John Flanagan makes a spectacular return to the world of Ranger’s Apprentice with the revelation of a conspiracy that could end the Kingdom!

John Flanagan returns to the world of Ranger’s Apprentice to find out what happens when Will’s apprentice, Maddie - the Royal Ranger - returns home to Castle Araluen. The Kingdom may have been at peace for a number of years, but there are always those who would commit treason to take power for themselves. When Maddie learns of a plot against the crown, she must go undercover to find out more - and hopefully stop it. But going undercover isn’t easy when you’re the princess - even if you’re trained as a Ranger.

Following on from Ranger's Apprentice: The Royal Ranger is a second book of Maddie's adventures. Princess by day, Ranger's apprentice by night, Maddie must keep her identity secret at all costs, for the sake of the Kingdom.

I love the series - pity the narrator changed

William Zapper was such an amazing narrator to this series. Such a difference having John Keating narrate - suddenly we have random terrible Irish accents for most of the characters & it has certainly lost its appeal for me (lucky there are only 2 books narrated by Keating!)

Great story, not as great narration

Story was great just like all Rangers Apprentice books. Was surprised to hear change of narrator to John Keating and struggled to adjust with some characters well known to listeners having new accents or pitch changes. Narration felt rushed and no tension built in delivery.

Bring back William Zappa

Where is William Zappa?! I love the story, I love John Flanagan's books and story telling, but the whole story is brought down by the narrator. Why does Gillian suddenly have a Scottish/Irish accent? He pronounces Alyss and Evelyn wrong and almost always sounds excited, their is no variation. John Keating does a great job at the Brotherband series but he just isn't right to the Rangers Apprentice series.

Good book, shame about the narrator.

We've listened to all 13 Rangers Apprentice books over the years and my children, both the boys and the girls, have loved them. Unfortunately the narrator has changed for this book (to John Keating) and is simply not as engaging. He reads the book as though it's a set of lecture notes with dramatic pauses in odd places and an inability to build suspense in his story telling. Such a shame as the story is as good as the others.

William Zapper where are yooooou???

Terrific story, but despite the reader’s obvious energy and enthusiasm he is slave to a reading habit he seems to have developed that is tied to his own rhythm and actually ignores grammatical sense of the narrative and often lands on the completely wrong emphasis or pauses illogically. His choice of accents is at odds with the story also. Guillam is from noble stock and in Zapper’s interpretation sounded well spoken and neutral. The John Lennon sound alike chosen by Keating is not successful and grates.

Suddenly Irish...

I have listen to these books from the start. Absolutely love the books, however I do not like the change in narrator... the characters I love now have an Irish sounding accent. Completely different sound in voices. Still love the storyline but hating the change

Bring back William Zappa

The story is great as per John Flanagan's usual standards.
But the narrator was terrible.
He was bearable in the Brother Band series but in this book - nope. Just no.

His range of voices for the different characters is so poor that half the time the essence of the character is lost and it all becomes same-same.

Horace sounds like Will and there is only a few characters you can identify by the tone/ voice.
So annoying and such a shame.

Good story, not so good narration

Great story. New narrator was ok, but not awesome. Some characters voices completely and drastically changed, which I was not a fan of.
