Publisher's Summary

Her throne awaits ... if she can live long enough to take it.It was on her 19th birthday that the soldiers came for Kelsea Glynn. They'd come to escort her back to the place of her birth – and to ensure she survives long enough to be able to take possession of what is rightfully hers.

But like many 1-year-olds, Kelsea is unruly, has high principles and believes she knows better than her elders. Unlike many 19-year-olds, she is about to inherit a kingdom that is on its knees – corrupt, debauched and dangerous.

Kelsea will either become the most fearsome ruler the kingdom has ever known ... or be dead within the week.

Critic Reviews

"I had kind of said I would never do a franchise again, so I was desperate to hate it. Unfortunately, I didn't sleep for about a week because I couldn't put the bloody thing down. It would be fair to say I became obsessed with the role and the book." (Emma Watson)
"The Queen of the Tearling is a gripping read with an enchanting heroine. Erika Johansen has created a wonderful world and I can't wait to read more." (Bernard Cornwell)
"Destined to be a fantasy classic. Johansen's writing is assured, confident and thrilling. I can't wait for the next book." (Amy McCulloch)
"A fast-paced and original fantasy, written with a confident and accomplished style, with plenty of intrigue and mystery." (Adrian Tchaikovsky)

Very entertaining.

An excellent and intriguing world is created here with a well crafted and satisfying cast of characters.

On the whole the narration was above average even though there were times it didn’t quite work for me.

The bottom line is that there’s no way I won’t be listening to the rest of the series. I want to learn more about this intriguing world and need to know how the various story lines resolve.

Gets better the more you read

In the beginning I found the main character annoying and the accents put on by Kellgren a bit off putting, but I found that both developed and grew on me.

I really enjoyed the fact that the story focuses more on politics than on any romance, but I feel that romance may emerge in the following books. Overall a good read!

Plot good, narration not so good

For some reason, I found this narrator had a really harsh note to her voice. She performed well, using different voices for characters, but I couldn't lose myself in the story because her timbre kept making my ears wince (yes that's a thing).

Enthralling!

What a fantastic journey! I found it difficult to turn off the car stereo and go to work, the story so gripping and engaging. The narrative was brought to life with excellent voice characterisation and accents. An absolute must read...looking forward to listening to the rest of the series!

Not a bad read

It took a while to get into the story and trying to get the setting as to what timeline this story has... still not clear on that. unfortunately the Narrator did not make listening easy at all. the books should be narrated by Davina Porter first of all and not have 3 different ones. I'll persevere with book 2, as it is narrated by Davina
