About this listen

It has almost been 300 years since Sir Robert Walpole arguably became the first holder of the office of prime minister in 1721 - an office which today is under scrutiny like never before.

The Prime Ministers, edited by leading political commentator Iain Dale, brings to life all 55 of Britain's 'First Among Equals' with an essay for each office holder, written by key figures in British politics. From the obscure 18th-century figures like the earl of Shelburne to 20th-century titans like Churchill and Thatcher, this audiobook provides a much-needed reminder about their motivations, failures and achievements.

Enjoyable overview of British Prime Ministers

This audiobook is a gem to listen. The Narration is clear and smooth but it is the use of a variety of Essayists on the Prime Ministers that is the book's strength.

I look forward, hopefully, to an updated edition covering the post Boris Johnson holders of the Office of Prime Minister.

Highly recommended for both students and observers of politics and for those curious but not necessarily political junkies.

Well done to the Editor/Narrator and the Essayists.

Terrible narrator!

This is a cracker of a book, and really great for any people wanting to gain a great overall picture of UK political history

But Ian Dale's narration is woeful.

He simply doesn't get the inclination right on so many words. It's like he's reading his own book for the first ever time. So many sentences should have been re-recorded but he just presses on.

It's such a pity. I'm about 2/3rds in and will finish, because I am interested, but I won't enjoy it as much as I should!

Wish I bought the normal book if I'm honest
