About this listen

Brother Lawrence decided that he needed to concentrate on a simple idea: loving God in whatever he did. The Practice of the Presence of God is a record of the conversations and letters exchanged between Brother Lawrence and people in his community, who came to him for advice once they noticed his passionate living for God.

As a Man Thinketh, by James Allen, gives examples to illustrate how "mind is the master weaver, both of the inner garment of character and the outer garment of circumstance," so that people may begin to weave in enlightenment and happiness.

An Insite

My thought was to see if I could find similarities within a spiritual person and one who is totally living a life in harmony with God. The outcome for me was - I need to study this little book more closely there is honest wisdom contained within.

1 good book & 1 bad book

The Practice of the Presence of God is a beautiful series of letters written by a man who truely loved and knew God. As a Man Thinketh is man centred and devoid of all semblance of faith and the spiritual life.

The first is God-help the second self-help. The first is warm and abounding with life, the second is cold and leads to death. Why are these books compiled together? Did the publish wish to juxtapose the way of the spirit and the way of the flesh? Surely they did not believe that “practicing the presence” was imaginative self-affirmation!

Take the time to listen to the first book, but do your self a favour by skipping the second. It is impossible for any rational person to wholly accept the premise of both these books - you must decide which path you take.

Father, teach me to love you as did our dear Brother Lawrence.
