About this listen

Talent means nothing when it comes to getting better. Practice is everything. But exactly what is good practice? How does good practice create talent?

The focus of this book is music practice, but these techniques and mindsets can be applied to any skill you want to improve. The Practice of Practice covers essential practice strategies and mindsets you won't find in any other book. You'll learn what research tells us about practice, but more importantly, you'll learn how great musicians in many genres of music think about practice, and you'll learn the strategies and techniques they use to improve.

This book will help you get better faster, whether you play rock, Bach, or any other kind of music. It will also help you be a more informed teacher or a more effective parent of a young learner. Don't practice longer, practice smarter.

I'm not a musician but got a lot out of it

Whilst focused mainly on music there is a lot of directly applicable advice for practice generally. Well worth a listen, particularly firt half before talking specific music practices.

Love it

Very straight-forward and simpe explanation of each points with proven research. Small simple and easily implementable practice tips that will go a long way. Will require a few listens to get the most of it. Definitely did not expect i would enjoy a book about practice this much

Deeply rich, amazingly simple -this book is a gift

This is a deeply rich and amazingly simple book that even a beginner with little time could understand and use and that only a master could write.

Along with the notes and the fingering and the technical details and the genres, music is an ancient language that has been in continuous use across various cultures. That is the attraction of music for most of us, professional or not. The scope of this book is very expansive - it talks about how people learn, and how we can practice, and how experts and genius have become who they are; it even goes beyond just the western traditions of music. It is a very rich book, with science and personal experience giving it depth.

And above all, personally for me, it is a generous book that gives me all the encouragement and guidance to pick up an instrument and play it. This is one of those rare times, I want to thank the author for writing this book with all my heart!

Good insights on practice

The author gives good insight on practice and lots of advice/examples with backup studies. However, nothing in the book is ground breaking or revolutionary and the reading could have been much better.

Good for learning a few tips and strategies and keeping motivation up.

On & on & on

Johnathon goes on & on about the same thing.
He has some good points but crikey didn’t anyone tell him the book needs major editing.
If I hear “in this books website” one more time I’ll crazy. Why does he feel the need to write the same thing 6 or 7 times throughout the book. Practice makes perfect this writer needs to work on practicing the art of writing. Good luck with it
