About this listen
Henri had a passion for Napoleon, and Napoleon had a passion for chicken. From Boulogne to Moscow Henri butchered for his emperor and never killed a single man.
Meanwhile, in Venice, the city of chance and disguises, Villanelle was born with the webbed feet of her boatman father - but in the casinos she gambled her heart and lost.
As the soldier-chef's love for Napoleon turns to hate, he finds the Venetian beauty, and together they flee to the canals of darkness.

My first reading of Jeanette Winterson.
Absolutely loved it! I can't find a story more impressive, touching, mysterious and sentimental than this book. Will continue reading her other books. She is a genius!
The audio performance was great, however I couldn't connect to the female voice. The male voice was so passionate and moving.

Short, passionate, and sad
Agree with another reviewer that the male voice is perfect for the character but the female, while definitely being a good narrator, did not feel to me like the character herself, and did not convey the ‘passion’ which is the character’s defining trait. But I got used to thinking of those parts as being read by someone else and it didn’t detract from the story at all. Short, passionate, and sad, like many love affairs, is this novel, and well worth reading.
