About this listen

Growing up on the Navajo Indian Reservation, David Crow and his siblings idolized their dad. Tall, strong, smart, and brave, the self-taught Cherokee regaled his family with stories of his World War II feats. But as time passed, David discovered the other side of Thurston Crow, the ex-con with his own code of ethics that justified cruelty, violence, lies - even murder.

A shrewd con artist with a genius IQ, Thurston intimidated David with beatings to coerce him into doing his criminal bidding. David's mom, too mentally ill to care for her children, couldn't protect him. One day, Thurston packed up the house and took the kids, leaving her nothing. Soon he remarried, and David learned that his stepmother was just as vicious and abusive as his father.

Through sheer determination, and with the help of a few angels along the way, David managed to get into college and achieve professional success. When he finally found the courage to stop helping his father with his criminal activities, he unwittingly triggered a plot of revenge that would force him into a showdown with Thurston Crow. With lives at stake, including his own, David would have only 24 hours to outsmart his father - the brilliant, psychotic man who bragged that the three years he spent in the notorious San Quentin State Prison had been the easiest time of his life.

A terrified, yet mischievous and daring boy…

David has had a very difficult childhood, but what shines through it all is Davids fantastic sense of humour! This story has it all.. sadness, fear, suspense, and humour. David has a fantastic memory and told his story with such honesty, and at times it seems like reading the autobiography of Bart Simpson, only his dad was 1000 times meaner! David was a mischievous, cheeky, and daring child, the type that could probably reduce the sanest of mothers into tears or a nervous breakdown. I would not be surprised if David had autism or ADHD as a child, however when he was a child these disorders were not yet discovered or known about. I’m glad as an adult David achieved some healing by embracing forgiveness, sometimes that is what it takes when everything else has been tried and failed. Also as an adult David had managed to have some amazing self insight including realising all he craved was his parents approval (like all children) so he was better equipt to address that and put it to rest. A 5 star story. The story was also narrated very well too, making it easy to listen to and follow. I also really liked how David was able to explain what had become of the characters in his book including himself, and his siblings, as well as many others. Thank you for sharing your story David, may strength be with you.

Psychological abuse

An absolute wild ride of adventure and misadventure, this story is one of the best depictions of the complexity of (psychologically) abusive relationships I’ve seen/read.
