About this listen

The Earl of St. Merryn needs a woman. His intentions are purely practical - he simply wants someone sensible and suitably lovely to pose as his betrothed for a few weeks among polite society. He has his own agenda to pursue, and a false fiancée will keep the husband-hunters at bay while he goes about his business. The simplest solution is to hire a paid companion. Finding the right candidate proves more of a challenge than he expected. But when he encounters Miss Elenora Lodge, the fire in her golden eyes sways him to make a generous offer. Her sorry financial circumstances - and dreams of a life of independence - convince her to accept. But St. Merryn appears to be hiding a secret or two, and things seem oddly amiss in his gloomy London home. Elenora soon discovers that this lark will be a far more dangerous adventure than she'd been led to believe. And the Earl of St. Merryn will find that the meek and mild companion he'd initially envisioned has become a partner in his quest to catch a killer - and an outspoken belle of the ball who stirs a bothersome passion in his practical heart.

Historic hysteric humour

Standard plot, him maze to exit, her has new assignment, a brilliant cast of useful or not acquaintances, friends, servants, interesting locations, fabulous buildings, beautiful scenery, alchemy, twisty undercurrents, nasty rips and masks of course, it is 1800’s London run on Ton time and theories.
Enjoyable in that main characters do waffle, discuss to distraction, work well together, the plot humour, conversation hysterics and era make this a fun listen.
Thank you for your thoughts Amanda Quick and your eloquence Bianca Amato, very much appreciated. :-)

Great fun

I loved this fun romp. Good strong characters, a bit of a mystery and of course, the possibity of a romance.
I would’ve like even more descriptions of clothing, shopping and day to day household management eg who did her hair for the first ball etc? In other words I didn’t want it to end.
I hope Amanda Quicks other books are as good.
Bianca Abarth was wonderful. You forget it’s a woman or man narrating when they do all the voices if they’re as talented as this.

Fantastic!

Romantic & intriguing. Loved both the male & female lead and thought the occasionally chapter from the killers view point was great addition. I’m new to this author & will definitely read more if her titles.

Suprisingly nice

Was expecting a very easy, predictable story but it suprised me. It was an interesting story with some nice twists and enchanting description of the love scenes.
May read more of this writer.

A Fairly good read

I enjoyed this novel, the characters where quite believable and I enjoyed the historic love story side of things but the alchemist machine business just felt a bit unnecessary and clumsy I enjoyed the rest of the story though.
