About this listen
An Amazon Charts and Washington Post bestseller, and a Goodreads Choice Award finalist.
“A laugh-out-loud funny, pitch-perfect novel that will have readers rooting for this unlikely, relatable, and totally lovable heroine, The Overdue Life of Amy Byler is the ultimate escape - and will leave moms everywhere questioning whether it isn’t time for a #momspringa of their own.” - New York Journal of Books
Overworked and underappreciated, single mom Amy Byler needs a break. So when the guilt-ridden husband who abandoned her shows up and offers to take care of their kids for the summer, she accepts his offer and escapes rural Pennsylvania for New York City.
Usually grounded and mild mannered, Amy finally lets her hair down in the city that never sleeps. She discovers a life filled with culture, sophistication, and - with a little encouragement from her friends - a few blind dates. When one man in particular makes quick work of Amy’s heart, she risks losing herself completely in the unexpected escape, and as the summer comes to an end, Amy realizes too late that she must make an impossible decision: stay in this exciting new chapter of her life, or return to the life she left behind.
But before she can choose, a crisis forces the two worlds together, and Amy must stare down a future where she could lose both sides of herself, and every dream she’s ever nurtured, in the beat of a heart.

At least two hours too long
This book dragged on for too long, otherwise it had the potential to be a good light read.

Never a dull moment #Mumspringa
Even without being a Mum, I could feel the emotional rollercoaster of this story and held on for dear life. From the opening chapter I was taken on a journey of laughter, longing, sadness and self-discovery. It is so easy to lose yourself these days (Mum or not) and this story even taught me a bit about myself - makes it the best kind of read.
Amy is the kind of person I can relate to. Being so lost in doing everything that you don’t necessarily need to be doing, that you forget to focus on yourself. Her happiness and passion for the smallest of things, to her love and adoration of her friends and family is admirable. She is written perfectly and I believe that there are many women, and men, out there who can relate to her martyring woes.
Daniel is the perfect embodiment of nerd, romantic, sweetheart and devout Dad that any woman would be lucky to have. His Latin jokes had me laughing every time. The bond between Amy and Daniel was evident from the first time he spoke to her.
Cory and Joe are the best and funniest kids I have read and I love their bond - through thick and thin. Their raw humour, very different personalities and perfect banter fits the story and the situations perfectly.
Tahlia and Lena - I actually have friends like these and now have a brand new appreciation for them. Their humour, quick wit, friendship and powerful love for Amy and her kids are amazing. They really bring the story together and allow for the outside perspective to peek in occasionally.
Matt is in a league of his own. Talented, witty, caring and intelligent - his Mum would definitely be proud of her son. His input into Amy’s life and the development of her Mumspringa and the way he himself inspired a trend for many is a beautiful underlay to the whole story.
Though not a conventional ending and one that many may not have expected, I loved this story and I would recommend it 100%. The author has delivered apt descriptions of location, place and space in various scenarios, good enough to sit the reader right there in the middle of the scene.
A perfect storm of emotions, excitement, adventure and love.
