About this listen
Set in a broken future England, where gunfights and monsters collide, this is the exciting first title in a phenomenal fantasy teen series by best-selling children's novelist Jonathan Stroud
England has been radically changed by a series of catastrophes - large cities have disappeared, and London has been replaced by a lagoon. The surviving population exists in fortified towns where they cling to traditional ways, while strangely evolved beasts prowl the wilderness beyond. Conformity is rigidly enforced, and those who fall foul of the rules are persecuted: some are killed; others are driven out into the wilds. Only a few fight back - and two of these outlaws, Scarlett McCain and Albert Browne, display an audacity and talent that makes them legends.

“A classic in the making.” (Eoin Colfer)
“Perfectly paced, beautifully written and bursting with black humour and bold ideas.” (Philip Reeve)
“Stroud’s writing is a treat; brilliantly crafted world building, taut action scenes, fabulous villains and witty dialogue. A wild ride indeed, and the first in a series.” (The Observer)

A wild post apocalyptic ride!
A thrilling adventure tale delivered expertly by narrator Kate Rawson, Stroud once again gifts us with a fantastic story. Fascinating world building sweeps you into the future riddled with ruined civilizations and blood thirsty beasts! However, I am disappointed by one important aspect of this book, which is why, for the first time ever - and I have been reading Stroud since I was 15 and the first Amulet of Samarkand book came out - I feel I must leave something other than an outstanding review.
The relationship between Scarlet amd Albert can only be viewed as somewhat of a domestic violence relationship, which made me very uncomfortable. She, an outlaw with a temper, frequently hits, insults and belittles Albert, a young, naive and very traumatised young boy, while he continues to look at her with adoration and respect. This behaviour is very problematic and teaches impressionable young readers that tolerating this kind of abuse is OK. Authors wield a great deal of power and influence over their readers which should be treated carefully in how they use it, and in this regard, I feel that Stroud has let his readers down. I would dearly like to see this problem addressed and rectified in the next book, else I will sadly cease to read this series...

Excellent new series from Stroud
Clever writing and great world building set the scene for an exciting story with a very entertaining couple of main characters and equally enjoyable others.
Witty dialogue keep the tone humorous in parts while also having moments of horror and tension.
The story is well paced and unpredictable.
Scarlett is a fantastically realised character as is Browne and their interactions are perfectly written.
The narration is a tad disappointing in my opinion in that I don’t believe she quite captures Scarlett’s wit and sassiness but it doesn’t spoil the book more than a tiny amount.
If you enjoy Stroud’s writing this book will not disappoint and if you are new to his work you are in for a treat discovering his ability to create very likeable characters in complex and entertaining worlds.
