About this listen

The workhouse orphan has little to celebrate at Christmas.

Charlotte and her sister Molly are all alone in the world after losing their mother. Forced into the workhouse, Molly soon succumbs to illness. After Charlotte endures harsh conditions, she hopes that her life is looking up when she gets a job as a maid.

Being a maid at the Highmore estate is hard work, but it offers food and a warm place to sleep. And it is there she meets Nate, an orphan like herself. Forming a fast bond, Charlotte is thankful she can count on Nate. Until tragedy strikes, and Nate is removed from the estate, leaving Charlotte shattered.

Knowing that she can't survive at the estate without Nate, Charlotte soon leaves and finds herself on the cold, cruel streets of London. Lonely and desperate for food and work, she tries to find Nate, but as the years pass, Charlotte realizes she will never see him again, and she knows she can't go on.

Can Charlotte find a better life? Will she ever see Nate again? Charlotte knows it will take a Christmas miracle.
