Publisher's Summary

What if your worst enemy was your only hope?

When a 15-year-old girl fails to make it home after school, DI Heather Filson believes she’s dealing with just another teenage runaway.

The girl’s grandfather, a notorious Glasgow gangster, disagrees. Convinced one of his underworld enemies has grabbed her, he’s prepared to bathe the city in blood in order to bring his princess home.

But as the days pass and the evidence mounts, Heather starts to fear that they’re both wrong and that a brutal killer from the past has returned.

A killer who once stalked the streets of her hometown, preying on vulnerable young victims.

A killer that DI Heather Filson is uniquely familiar with....

My, oh my!

So different to Kirk’s DCI Logan and Hoon series. There are still the trademark attitudes and punchy one-liners, but this novel is a far more brutal, intense, serious-crime read than either Logan or Hoon.

Brilliantly told from the perspective of protagonist DI Heather Stilton. It took me most of the book to like her but that is the point. She is as broken as any of the other characters Kirk has created. I can see why some readers have disliked her but I do feel she’ll become an awesome character in a long-term series.

The crimes are horrific (skip the pages horrible), but Heather’s childhood involvement underpins the unfolding trauma. Guest mentions of Shona McGuire and Jack Logan were excellent touches.

In all, the characters and the story develop and this book grew and grew on me. Initially, I missed Kirk’s trademark wit but the seriousness of the crime would’ve made it inappropriate.

Mature, demanding and brilliant writing from Kirk!

Excellent

What a wonderful addition to the DCI Logan world thus book is.

The story is excellent and unexpected and the way Kirk has managed to flesh out DI Filson’s character forced me to reappraise my opinion of her. Everyone has a history, everyone is shaped by that history and this book reminds us of that.

Perfectly narrated by McCarron I couldn’t help but be drawn into caring about the characters. Ace is one of the most interesting characters Kirk has ever created and she is brought beautifully to life by Cathleen’s narration.

Excellent story, superb narration

This is the first JD Kirk book I've listened to and I loved it. The story was great and the characters were very well-developed and nuanced. The highlight for me was the narration - Cathleen was fabulous, far better than many that I've listened to. She really brought the characters to life and with her beautiful Scottish accent was a pleasure to listen to.

Great extension of the DCI Jack Logan series.

Yes, I enjoyed it, Definitely trademark JD Kirk style, humour, twists, and characters, for which I'm a dedicated fan. Thank you, keep them coming!

Brilliant

JD Kirk does it again with another main character series in the form of D.I Heather Wilson. Thoroughly enjoyed this first book, have already started in the second.

New heroine

This was quite different to how I thought it might be. Heather’s character developed in a different way to her cameos in DCI Logan stories.
Story is a bit dark and she is a loner. I missed the team interaction.

More than expected

Took a bit to decide if I like THIS Heather compared to how I had imagined her from jack Logan stories. I like this Heather a lot I hv decided and I think the more we get into her stories we will all love her. I did miss the TEAM part of this series but maybe that will develop with the series.
This story was good and certainly took a different path than what I had expected.
Bring on more Heather Filson books

What an ending!!

Wasn’t sure I’d like this one as much, but as a dedicated JD Kirk fan I had to give it a go. A bit of a slow burn that is totally worth it. Missed Angus King’s narration but Cathleen did brilliantly. Absolutely love JD Kirk’s writing
