About this listen

The brand-new thriller from the number one Sunday Times best seller.

In a sleepy French village, the body of a man shot through the head is disinterred by the roots of a fallen tree. A week later a famous art critic is viciously murdered in a nearby house. The deaths occurred more than 70 years apart.

Asked by a colleague to inspect the site of the former, forensics expert Enzo Macleod quickly finds himself embroiled in the investigation of the latter. Two extraordinary narratives are set in train - one historical, unfolding in the treacherous wartime years of occupied France, the other contemporary, set in the autumn of 2020 as France re-enters Covid lockdown.

And Enzo's investigations reveal an unexpected link between the murders - the Mona Lisa.

Tasked by the exiled General Charles de Gaulle to keep the world's most famous painting out of Nazi hands after the fall of France in 1940, 28-year-old Georgette Pignal finds herself swept along by the tide of history. Following in the wake of Da Vinci's Mona Lisa as it is moved from château to château by the Louvre, she finds herself just one step ahead of two German art experts sent to steal it for rival patrons - Hitler and Göring.

What none of them know is that the Louvre itself has taken exceptional measures to keep the painting safe, unwittingly setting in train a fatal sequence of events extending over seven decades.

Events that have led to both killings.

The Night Gate spans three generations, taking us from war-torn London, the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, Berlin and Vichy France, to the deadly enemy facing the world in 2020. In his latest novel, Peter May shows why he is one of the great contemporary writers of crime fiction.

recommended

This is a 4.4 that I have rounded down to a 4. It is well written, interesting and an intelligent book that had some nice twists. I would recommend this book.

Great read excellent narration

Well written story with well rounded characters . The narration was superbly done
My only complaint is regarding outdated concepts . In 2021 do we really need such statements as ‘the female doctor ‘ ?? Should have been picked up by the editor if not the author it added nothing to the narrative.

Great story!

I’ve never “read” Peter May before but will see if he’s written other books after this one. I enjoyed the pacing and division of this tale into the two strands which came together so well at the end. The reading was excellent too. The descriptions took me to times and places I’ve never been. It’s always awful to reach the end of a good book. Loved it, thanks so much Peter for hours of great entertainment. Wouldn’t this book make an excellent movie?

Fast paced and gets you involved.

Fast paced story that hooks you.
Spoilt for me by story line that has main character being incredibly unprofessional and indeed stupid at end.

The wait is over - or just beginning again!

Thank you! Thank you Peter May for another beguiling Enzo McCloud mystery. How I've missed the dry sense of humour, the enigmatic adventures and romps through the French countryside. I really enjoy the well researched information included in the story. This latest book did not disappoint at all! But now I have to wait another year for (hopefully) another tome. I promise to wait patiently!!

Awesome narration

Love the narration wonderfully Scottish and this time with a fair few French place names dropped in. Multi layered story set in different decades. Was it written last year? Seems like now ... like yesterday. Awesome read worth it - thank you.

Good story though a little slow

I enjoyed this book overall but did find the storyline rather slow at times and perhaps a little predictable.

Maybe Mona Lisa

I loved this book and finished listening only a few days before we are to visit the painting itself. A very clever story and Peter May is a really good storyteller.

Absorbing till the end

Wow I loved it from start to finish. Has to replay some parts when I got lost with the characters, but I do that with every book. Wanted it to finish but I didn’t want it to either. Where to now for me and Enzo now ?

Interesting perspective

I love the subject matter that Peter May has chosen to write this book. It held my interest with every word. He teased the listener with small yet unexpected twists with Dickensian links in the story. Perfectamundo
