About this listen

Imagine finding out that your unborn child was a lie....

Alisha Barba's dreams of being a detective were shattered when a murder suspect broke her back across a brick wall. Now on her feet again, with her police career in limbo, she receives a message from an old school friend, Cate Beaumont, who is eight months pregnant and in trouble.

On the night they arrange to meet, Cate is mown down by a car that kills her husband instantly. As paramedics fight to save her life they discover there is no baby. Her pregnancy is an elaborate lie, a cruel deception.

Why? What happened? As Alisha sets out to answer these questions, she is drawn deeper and deeper into a dangerous quest that will take her from the East End of London to Amsterdam's red light district and into a murky underworld of sex trafficking, slavery and exploitation.

A gripping thriller, with twists at every turn, The Night Ferry is Michael Robotham's finest novel yet.

A complicated but fulfilling journey

The reader enlivens a story that sometimes appears unbelievable. It’s in parts self righteous downplaying the spiritual dimension of life, yet it’s also quite realistic for the protagonist is very much representative of her generation, one that pursues a goal with such tenacity it justifies stepping over some other worthy values. Worth the experience.

Shame about the reader

Reasonable story. Good pace but a bit too preachy about adoption, surrogacy and people trafficking. The reader is pretty accurate but her voice seems too weak for our heroine and men’s voices are very forced. It wasn’t at all the Ruiz I have loved in readings of the O’Loughlin stories.

Always kept in suspense

I thought the middle section was too long - it all got a bit tedious, but I still enjoyed the story very much.

This crime pushed ethical boundaries

A very believable crime which had me guessing, reassessing and confirming my hypotheses. It's consequences so far reaching. Characterisation is developed with insight and honesty with the protagonist entertaining me with her quips and asides as she attempts to deal with expectations and responsibilities within her personal life; her relationships with family, work and partner. Narrator does a good job with the accents for my ear.

topical and gripping

loved many of Robotham's previous books but this one is broader in plot and location. I appreciated the complexity of the story line and admired the talents of the narrator.

Clever plot with some delicious twists

I thought the plot was all too plausible. There were some far-fetched moments, but what psychological thriller doesn't?

I found the book and narration engaging.

Unlike other reviews, I didn't find the plot confusing. Perhaps this is because I was listening in the car on troops that didn't require much brain power and long walks.

On the whole, I found the narration very good - she did Ruiz with what sounded like a Yorkshire accent, so she gets a big tick for that. The pace was about right. Her Dutch accent occasionally slipped into something that might have been a bit Mexican.

I did have to warm to her reading.
