About this listen
When a murder suspect broke her back across a brick wall, Alisha Barba's dreams of being a detective were shattered. Now on her feet again, but with her career and private life in limbo, she receives a message from an old school friend, Cate Beaumont, who is eight months pregnant and in trouble.
On the night they arrange to meet, Cate is mown down by a car that kills her husband instantly. As paramedics fight to save her life, they uncover the first in a series of haunting and elaborate deceptions. They trigger a dangerous quest and as Alisha and her old boss, Detective Inspector Vincent Ruiz, travel deeper into a world of sex-trafficking, slavery, and exploitation, they must confront their own prejudices - and will come to question the very laws they have sworn to uphold.

Almost gave up listening...
I've listened to all the Michael Rowbotham books available, so I took this into consideration when doing this revue; the others are much better by far. I agree with others opinions about the narrator not being suitable...I did get used to her as the book went on. I found the story a bit average and was happy to finish it to be honest...

annoying narrator
I have listened to many of Michael's books and loved the male narrator so it took me along time to get used to a female voice. I found it spoilt the book and I didn't en joy it as much as his other's.

another Robotham classic but not his usual fare.
Being a huge fan of the narration of Sean Barret, I initially struggled to start listening to anyone not Sean B, especially female, I am female and much prefer a male narrator.
only thing worse is a female Australian, and I am both, and yes a hypocrite!!
This was so unlike Robothoms usual crime style. Being a big fan of the unconventional hero Ruiz is always a treat.
All I can say, is try it, even without Sean B narrating. So different but twists and turns galore, never quite sure until the last few minutes!!!
Well worth devoting an afternoon or two.

Disappointing.
After all the other books I have listened to from Michael Robotham this one was very disappointing.
At times I nearly gave up. The story was feeble & unconvincing.
The narrator over pronounced most words which I found irratimg & her version of a man's voice was pathetic!

Narration let’s the story down
I’m a big Michael Robotham fan but unfortunately this is not one if his best stories. Also the narration is flat and whilst clear it adds no depth or colour to the story .

Not up to Michael's usual quality
So disappointed!
I love Michael Robotham's books usually, but this one reads as though he was in a hurry to finish it, be shot of the whole storyline and characters.
The story was just that. A story. Michael usually has us going along as 'part of the ride' but this was as though you are 'outside, looking in'.
