About this listen
The former Confederate states have continually mythologized the South's defeat to the North, depicting the Civil War as unnecessary, or as a fight over states' Constitutional rights, or as a David v. Goliath struggle in which the North waged "total war" over an underdog South. In The Myth of the Lost Cause, historian Edward Bonekemper deconstructs this multi-faceted myth, revealing the truth about the war that nearly tore the nation apart 150 years ago.

Very rewarding
One of my favourite authors Greg Iles recommended this book. The Lost Cause is the theme of Iles' next Penn Cage novel. This is exciting because the Natchez Burning Trilogy was one of the finest sets of page-turning thrillers I've ever read. It even motivated me to visit Mississippi in 2019.
The Lost Cause is white Americans, usually southern, who were raised to believe a mythical version of the South's defeat by the Union, depicting the Civil War as being about states' Constitutional rights, or a romanticised David V Goliath struggle over the brave underdog "The South". Writers, musicians, and filmmakers have perpetrated this myth by glorifying Robert E. Lee. (The cult of Lee) Bonekeeper sets out the overwhelming evidence that the war was solely about slavery, Lee became an icon of the Lost Cause used to strengthen the white supremacy of the South. In fact, it was Ulysses S Grant who was the brilliant general who won the war not through brute force as the lost Cause would have it but he won with his distinctive sense of humility, moral courage, and determination. The Cult of Lee resented Grant because of his strong enforcement of Reconstruction, his prosecution of the Klan, and the defeat of Lee.
Grant, who became president, was the first to treat blacks as both human and American.
This is a terrific read about the Civil war and how the phenomenon of "fake news" has been going on for over 150 years. Highly recommend. (lots of researching interesting topic along the way)

It is hard to argue with the facts
I really enjoyed the way in which Mr. Bonekemper III presented the words that are used in the secession debates and state constitutions which clearly identify slavery as the base cause of the civil war, and honestly to the Confederacy losing the war. I also liked the presentation of the real numbers of casualties when debunking the myth of Grant the butcher. well done.
