About this listen

The unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Marian Keye’s heartbreaking stunner of a novel, The Mystery of Mercy Close, read by the actress Niamh Daly.

“I employ this thing called The Shovel List.” “A shovel...?” “No. A Shovel List. It’s more of a conceptual thing. It’s a list of all the people and things I hate so much that I want to hit them in the face with a shovel.”

Meet Helen - youngest of the Walsh sisters and a law unto herself. She’s easily bored, has an inability to filter her thoughts and was fired from every job she ever had before she found her true calling as a private investigator. But times are tough for PIs, and Helen’s had no choice but to take on the search for AWOL boyband has-been Wayne Diffney: The Wacky One. It’s not all bad this game of Where’s Wayne.

It may have brought her charming crook of an ex Jay Parker back into her life, but it’s giving her an excuse to avoid the usual Walsh family dramas and the intense looks from her gorgeous boyfriend Artie that make her heart beat wildly with lust and panic in equal measure. But most of all it’s an excellent distraction from the huge swarm of black vultures gathering over her head. If she hides out in her target’s empty house on Mercy Close for long enough maybe they’ll go away...But as Helen begins to unravel the mysteries secreted on Mercy Close she discovers a kindred spirit in a man unwilling to be found. Could someone be telling her to look a little closer to home?

I love this series!

I’m listening to this series one book after another and each time I think the last book can’t be bettered… our author is so incredibly talented and the narrator/s capture each member of the Walsh family so well, I feel like I know them. The Irish humour is ‘laugh out loud’ I don’t want it to end!

Glad I stuck with it

Sometimes I wonder if it's just the mood I'm in. I was really struggling to get into this story wise. I just couldn't get my head around where it was going and I was seriously going to give it up. However, I hate wasting money for one thing, and figured I would listen a little longer. All the threads began to come together. It truly was worth it. Such a great listen with many excellent themes intertwined. Loved the humour. Love the main protagonist. I also have to admit a definite fondness for the Irish setting. What an absolute delight. This is my first Marion Keyes, it won't be my last, especially if the talented Niamh Daley narrates. She is superb. Well worth the listen, a great book.

Another winner

Another good Walsh Family story. It covers serious topics so probably needs to come with a warning but over all a solid piece of writing and narrating

Another classic

I was surprised by how much I loved and in the end admired this book. Not that I should have been, considering Marian Keyes is one of my favourite writers. But the way she handles the difficult-for-me-to-read-about topic of depression is so moving and clever, without being triggering. There was one chapter where I began to think ‘uh oh’ but that then that quickly turned around. For the rest of the time I was so engaged and intrigued, and the brilliant way Keyes writes about such dark topics leaves me in awe. And of course I laughed until I cried on at least five different occasions. That swan scene! The reader was wonderful. Wish it wasn’t over. Now what am I supposed to listen to?

The Mystery of Mercy Close

I enjoyed this light read, a little bit grittier than the usual 'chic lit' genre that I normally associate Marian Keys with. I enjoyed the character development, and think she tackled the main characters 'mental health' issues convincingly. I'm not so sure about the sex scenes though, I found them unconvincing and probably unnecessary - as if they were added as an after thought to 'sex it up'. I thought the narrator was very good and pitched the characters voices with their demeanours really well, over all an enjoyable read/listen.
