About this listen

Agatha Christie’s most daring crime mystery – an early and particularly brilliant outing of Hercule Poirot, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, with its legendary twist, changed the detective fiction genre for ever.

Roger Ackroyd was about to be married. He had a life of wealth and privilege. First he lost his fiancée – and then his life.

The day after her tragic suicide he retires upstairs to read a mysterious letter, leaving his closest friends and family to eat dinner below.

Just a few hours later he is found stabbed to death in a locked room with a weapon from his own collection.

Was he killed for money? For love? Or for something altogether more sinister?

The truth will out.
But you won’t see it coming.

Fantastic story

I... I don't know what's real anymore, everything I know is a lie.

But really this story was really very interesting.

Good story

I thought the speaker reading the story did really well. The story line was good and had me baffled till the very end. Good story line.

Interesting surprise, but average narrator

The big reveal at the very was a huge surprise. However, this being my fourth Agatha Christie novel, I should have realised that nothing it's impossible. I did have an issue with the narrator and his narration of Hercule Poirot's accent. The accent changed quite drastically throughout the whole narration. I applaud his attempt to match the narration of the narrator in Murder on the Orient Express. However, Hercule's accents ranged from British to French to Belgian instead, it should've been kept constant at one of these three options.

excellent

A classic Christie, impeccably read. A great introduction to her work, perhaps one of the best.

Papa Poirot the Great

A murder. Numerous suspects. All have a motive. Yet “the one” is always someone unassuming to the reader. The narrator did a fabulous job bringing the characters to life. This novel felt so cozy and intimate. I felt I was in the room with the detective uncovering clues.

A Clever Mystery, Right to the Last Word

I thoroughly enjoyed the ending to this mystery. In the middle I was a bit bored by the setting and didn't find the characters as dynamic as I'd usually like however it all comes together perfectly at the end. Great performance by Hugh Fraser, comforting for anyone who loves the David Suchet Poirot TV series.
