About this listen

Soon to be a major motion picture starring Idris Elba and Kate Winslet.

On a stormy winter night, two strangers wait for a flight at the Salt Lake City airport. Ashley Knox is an attractive, successful writer who is flying east for her much anticipated wedding. Dr Ben Payne has just wrapped up a medical conference and is also eager to return home to Jacksonville, Florida, for a slate of surgeries he has scheduled for the following day.

When the last outgoing flight is cancelled due to a broken de-icer and a forthcoming storm, Ben finds a charter plane that can take him around the weather front. And when the pilot says the single engine prop plane can fit one more, Ben offers the seat to Ashley. Then the unthinkable happens. The pilot has a heart attack mid-flight and the plane crashes into the High Uintas Wilderness - one of the largest stretches of harsh and remote land in the United States.

Ben, who has broken ribs, and Ashley, who suffers a terrible leg fracture, along with the pilot's dog, are faced with an incredibly harrowing battle to survive. Ben records messages to his beloved wife on a small tape recorder; seeing his devotion, Ashley wonders if she has rushed into her engagement. As the days on the mountains become weeks, their survival becomes increasingly perilous. How will they make it out of the wilderness? And if they do, how will this experience change them?

So much better than the film!

Really enjoyed this and so glad I listened to it before watching the film which was disappointing. Loving audible and being able to revisit my passion for reading on my commute!

Survival, romance but not much adventure or action.

Survival/ romance story but not but adventure or near death as you would expect. Slow to start & a tad repetitive- middle of the story there’s snow, snow and you guessed it, even more snow. Ben dragging Ashley, tending to her injuries and the never-ending hunt for nourishment.
Also a bit convenient- to be stranded with a orthopaedic surgeon, who enjoys mountain walking and happen to have all the gear. (Probably why it’s been made in to a movie!)
I saw the ending coming, although not how I expected a sane man to do things.
Some cringe worthy moments that are not romantic (commenting on her hairy legs after being stranded for weeks or sagging bits).
Picked up the book to read before I watch the movie.
Narrator didn’t have the best voice for a strong lead o& doubling as the female voice. Made her sound weak.
Heartbreaking ending but seemed to just be dragged out with all of it coming together within the last 2hrs of listening.

Great book

I really enjoyed this book which was a lot about coincidences and who you meet and at what time in a lifetime. Maybe a little slow in places for some but I enjoyed the detail. Great narration. Recommend this title

An amazing story

This story grabbed my attention from the first chapter. It was intensely moving, action packed and fascinating. I listen on my car sound system and some parts moved me to tears so that I had to stop driving.

5++++ 'One Step at a time' stars!!!

A totally absorbing read that I am unlikely to forget for a long time. A powerful story of survival, love, and the human spirit that will tugged at my heartstrings and had me stay up late to finish.

Charles Martin expertly weaves a story about Ben, a surgeon returning home from a medical conference, and Ashley, a writer on her way to her engagement dinner, who survive a plane crash and find themselves stranded in the mountains.

The story is told from Ben's perspective as he reflects on his childhood, his first love, forgiveness, and the choices he made along the way that determined his character and fed his spirit. And the lesson he learns up in the mountain... hit me with all the feels!

This is a thoroughly beautiful and romantic love story. Ben is a perfectly developed character, with an incredible arc and a powerful story to tell (not to mention he is achingly swoon-worthy in every sense as well!)
Loved Ben.
Loved Ashley.
Loved all the characters and all the feels.
