Publisher's Summary

You think you know the truth about the people you love. But one discovery can change everything....

Eight-year-old Billy goes missing one day, out flying his kite with his sister Rose. Two days later he is found dead.

Sixteen years on, Rose still blames herself for Billy's death. How could she have failed to protect her little brother? Rose has never fully recovered from the trauma, and one of the few people she trusts is her neighbour Ronnie, whom she has known all her life. But one day Ronnie falls ill, and Rose goes next door to help him...and what she finds in his attic room turns her world upside down.

Rose thought she knew the truth about what happened to Billy. She thought she knew her neighbour. Now the only thing she knows is that she is in danger....

The Mistake is a completely gripping thriller that will keep you up all night, from the top 10 best-selling author of Blink, Liar and Safe with Me. Perfect for fans of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train.

Clunky but enjoyable

KL Slater is a good story-teller and i enjoy this narrator (forgiving the "Aussie" accent).
I have to agree with readers who found Rose a bit too insipid and therefore annoying.
Whilst the storyline is good, the characterisation would've been strengthened by a less gullible Rose. After all, the point about grooming of minors is that you don't have to be an idiot to fall for it. Making Rose overly stupid, living in a toy-town like village where everyone but her friend Cassie apparently has a simple, naive view of life, undermines this reality and renders the whole thing black and white.
A part from this lack of subtlety and a few minor plot holes (the resolution re. Cassie doesn't quite ring true for me), this is a good read--especially for free.

Painfully slow

This is one of those books that spreads something that could be written in 50 pages into a whole book. Lacks depth, complexity, pace and an interesting main character.

Excellent study of mental afflictions woven through a thrilling storyline

Roses’ acceptance and understanding of her condition is centre piece to a great story intertwined with fascinatingly flawed characters that we can easily relate to.
Excellent narration although the Aussie/Kiwi accent needs work.
Definitely worth getting through a slow start, as you will be fully engrossed before too long!

The Mistake

An enjoyable enough thriller. Agree with others about the poor Australian accent. Was a cross between Aussie, New Zealand, and South African with a British twist. The character living in Australia and coming to visit didn’t seem to add to the story much. I could imagine the 18yo naïveté of the main character, especially when you consider her coming from a little village where young ones could expect to go to school, get a job, fall in love, marry, raise their kids in the village, and never leave. I can also imagine hanging onto the trauma of going through a controlling relationship until one is ready to let go. I liked the twist at the end. Good book for being provided at no extra cost.

worth a listen - but don't expect genius

This writer's idea to title half the chapters of this book "Sixteen Years Earlier" was REALLY annoying, because the chapters were often consecutive - whole groups of them - each called "Sixteen Years Earlier" - were clumped together, so I kept thinking we were going back in time by sixteen year increments. Why she couldn't just label the two different time periods by year I don't know...
but that was just my first gripe - the protagonist was flimsy - the drama was fairly slow - and the story was predictable and hollywoodish in its cliched unfolding.
I just felt I knew what was coming whole chapters in advance. (even though I thought they were going backwards)
Having said all that - it wasn't horribly written and the narrator was good - nice and steady with an even tone - and the story was at least listenable in an unchallenging kind of way... I'd give it a B- I guess... which is much better than a lot of the other dross on here...

Excellent

Excellent book. Highly recommend. Had my interest from the beginning and didn’t see the ending coming at all. X

Very enjoyable

I enjoyed the story. With most suchlike stories, I could usually work out whom the murderer was, but not in this case.
