About this listen
From the beloved World Fantasy Award-winning author of Witchmark comes a sweeping, romantic new fantasy set in a world reminiscent of Regency England, where women's magic is taken from them when they marry. A sorceress must balance her desire to become the first great female magician against her duty to her family.
Beatrice Clayborn is a sorceress who practices magic in secret, terrified of the day she will be locked into a marital collar that will cut off her powers to protect her unborn children. She dreams of becoming a full-fledged Magus and pursuing magic as her calling as men do, but her family has staked everything to equip her for Bargaining Season, when young men and women of means descend upon the city to negotiate the best marriages. The Clayborns are in severe debt, and only she can save them, by securing an advantageous match before their creditors come calling.
In a stroke of luck, Beatrice finds a grimoire that contains the key to becoming a Magus, but before she can purchase it, a rival sorceress swindles the book right out of her hands. Beatrice summons a spirit to help her get it back, but her new ally exacts a price: Beatrice's first kiss...with her adversary's brother, the handsome, compassionate, and fabulously wealthy Ianthe Lavan.
The more Beatrice is entangled with the Lavan siblings, the harder her decision becomes: If she casts the spell to become a Magus, she will devastate her family and lose the only man to ever see her for who she is; but if she marries - even for love - she will sacrifice her magic, her identity, and her dreams. But how can she choose just one, knowing she will forever regret the path not taken?

Regency style with a splash of magic
Rich descriptions, and M. Quirk is a brilliant narrator as always. I did think the story wrapped up a little too conveniently and the pacing was off. The magic side of things was reasonably enough done.

A refreshing standout in a tired genre
I loved the subversions to the classic 'marriage market' conventions and the interesting magic system. I especially appreciated that the male love interest started out with ingrained bias and expectations which he was forced to deconstruct even as a more sympathetic character. I liked that scheming women were not the villains of this story, but quite obviously the men, who had forced the women around them to behave in ways that they didn't always want to in order to survive in a world not built for them. I also have a real soft spot for little magic creatures that bond with a person, and loved the way this gave me the vibes of the 'His Dark Materials' series at times. My primary reason for giving only 4 stars, despite throughly enjoying the book, is that I think more time could have been spent building up the romance, the key friendship, and the main villain relationship of the story. the plot line was wonderful and I enjoyed the characters (although Harriet got on my nerves as I suspect she was supposed to). I simply wanted more time invested in relationships and for the outcomes of challenges in these relationships to be more drawn out and expanded on.
in regards to the narrator I thought she did a splendid job, her male voices were good, her spirit voices were great, and I thought her accent work was well done given the nations in question were fantastical (although I suspect these countries were definitely based on real places which gave them a lovely ring of authenticity, although once again I could have had so much more world-building and loved it!). Ultimately, I think this book would have been 5 stars all round if there had just been more! this concept I feel had potential to be more than one book, and although I'm not a fan of unnecessarily dragging something out for the sake of it, this is a rare occasion in which the story needed more time and space to grow in order for the climax to have the payoff it deserved. I felt that the whole ending section seemed rushed, and a little too neat and tidy. I will however, be seeking out more books by this author in future and had a great time living in this world with these characters!
