About this listen

From the Hugo Award–winning and New York Times bestselling author of the Expanse, James S. A. Corey, comes the start of a monumental new space opera series.

HOW HUMANITY CAME TO THE PLANET CALLED ANJIIN IS LOST IN THE FOG OF HISTORY, BUT THAT HISTORY IS ABOUT TO END.

The Carryx—part empire, part hive—has waged wars of conquest for centuries, destroying or enslaving species across the galaxy in its conflict with an ancient and deathless enemy.

When they descend on the isolated world of Anjiin, the human population is abased, slaughtered, and put in chains. The best and brightest are abducted, taken to the Carryx world-palace to join prisoners from a thousand other species.

Dafyd Alkhor, assistant to a prestigious scientist, is captured along with his team.

Even he doesn’t suspect that his peculiar insight and skills will be the key to seeing past their captors’ terrifying agenda.

Swept up in a conflict beyond his control and vaster than his imagination, Dafyd is poised to become humanity’s champion—and its betrayer.

This is where his story begins.

“No one builds a universe like James S. A. Corey. The Mercy of Gods is wilder and weirder than you can imagine, and when it ends, all you’ll want is … more.”—John Scalzi, New York Times bestselling author

not quite the same magic as the expanse

good ideas, weird implementation.
it's like they wanted to have another go at the fizzle that was Cibola burn / Ilus, but ended up with the same mildly interesting dud.

Fascinating story, captivating narration

A fascinating read, loved the exploration of human behaviour but also the rich imagination and attention to detail when describing the universe and it's inhabitants. The narrator was compelling, and as engaging as ever.

Not Expanse II

Topical themes well developed and with a credible crew. I am looking forward to the journey.

Not really sure where they’re going with this …

This is pretty good sci fi. Fantastic beasts on other planets. Some space battles. Lots of science. Also romance between scientists. Theres a swarm entity that is interesting but also a bit like things you’ve already met in Adrian Tchaikovsky novels, and also a bit like the mimic you meet in Abraham’s Hunter’s Run, which is better than this novel and I wish wasn’t a standalone. I miss the social commentary of the expanse - old school cognitive estrangement - but was prepared to let it go. Possibly it didn’t need to be completely abandoned. I think it might have been good to set this on a world behind a collapsed ring and leave the expanse series and the crew of the Rocinante behind that way.

Outstanding voice acting and story

It’s so difficult to find quality sci-fi that isn’t derivative or pulpy military trash. Once again S.A. Corey has out done themselves. Great beginning.

Continued Excellence

The writers flex their creative world-building muscles again here in super resolution. Some of the human-social and existential themes touched on in The Expanse are dealt with again here but this is a different, far-future universe. Jefferson Mays on point as ever.

The start of something special.

lived the story and the am looking forward to where it goes in the next chapter. The integration of science, social constructs and behaviours played out across a background of shock awe is great, especially if you like the concept of Alien lifeforms and interplanetary travel. Only one negative. at times the narration/narrator does not make it easy to differentiate between characters so you are left waiting for signs as to whom the voice is associated with. Small issue but one that does at times drag your attention from what, towards whom. Looking forward to listening to the next addirion to this story.

The Quality of Authors

This is not The Expanse. But it's good for many of the same reasons The Expanse was good.

Another great story

Complex, believable characters struggle with impossible situations and morally ambiguous decisions. This story is much better than that sounds. A great start to the new series from the authors of The Expanse, convincingly performed. Can’t wait for the second book.

Great book, a little hard to get into.

I am not sure why I had to listen to the start of this book 3 times. But seeing as I love the author I persisted and once it going, it was great.

However, note to the author, I am not wasting anymore money/credits on 2 hour accompanying novellas.
