About this listen

Following an accident that almost cost him his life, Howard Falcon was not so much saved as he was converted, through the use of prosthetics, into something faster, stronger and smarter...but also slightly less human and more machine than he was. And with this change came an opportunity - that of piloting a mission into Jupiter's atmosphere and ultimately of making first contact with the life forms he discovers there.

Picking up the threads of humanity versus artificial intelligence and machines, and of encounters with the alien, this collaborative novel between two superb writers is a sequel to Howard Falcon's adventures.

A proper science fiction adventure, this is perfect for fans of Golden Age SF as well as the modern SF listener.

Read by Peter Kenny.

Another great Baxter book

A well-narrated story exploring our own Solar System, divided structurally (much as with Proxima and Ultima) into three or four larger pieces.
Howard Falcon is a convincing, stoic protagonist.
Can recommend to fans of Proxima/Ultima and The Long Earth.

A thinking read

Enjoyed the story but found I lost focus with the interludes to the 1960's. Very interesting and researched concepts to keep you hooked.

Well performed. Good story

Was a little hard to get into at first because it skips through time pretty quick, but it makes sense as you progress further. Love Reynolds and had read my first Baxter book prior to this.

A great experience

Clarke! Baxter! Reynolds! Kenny! All people I love. Despite some issues with pacing Baxter and Reynolds have wrung every last detail out of Clarkes short story and crafted a great book. The ending was very strong and emotionally affecting. Peter Kennys performance made the book for me. Best voice actor in the business makes everything he does better

A great but different SF story

Loved the British accent which gave the story a unique feel. Felt like an old fashion type of story but was intrigued as to the direction it took. Very much recommended and worth while sticking with it until the end.

Very Good

Very well written and performed sci-fi. I've read nearly every sci-fi and this would fit in the top 5% of hard sci-fi. Loved it.
