About this listen
The woman in the portrait is perfect. So why does she feel so terrified, so alone?
Florence, the 1560s. Lucrezia, third daughter of Cosimo de' Medici, is free to wander the palazzo at will, wondering at its treasures and observing its clandestine workings. But when her older sister dies on the eve of marriage to Alfonso d'Este, ruler of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio, Lucrezia is thrust unwittingly into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage and her father to accept on her behalf.
Having barely left girlhood, Lucrezia must now make her way in a troubled court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed. Perhaps most mystifying of all is her husband himself, Alfonso. Is he the playful sophisticate he appears to be before their wedding, the aesthete happiest in the company of artists and musicians, or the ruthless politician before whom even his formidable sisters seem to tremble?
As Lucrezia sits in uncomfortable finery for the painting that is to preserve her image for centuries to come, one thing becomes worryingly clear. In the court's eyes, she has one duty: to provide the heir who will shore up the future of the Ferrarese dynasty. Until then, for all of her rank and nobility, her future hangs entirely in the balance.

intrigue in Italy
I loved it, especially as I had just finished watching The Serpent Queen, story of Catherine de Medici.
Such intriguing and terrifying times.

A Masterpiece
Superb story and superb narration. I can’t decide whether I prefer this or Hamnet. A winner all round.

Good book, excellent narration, terrible editing
The narrator did a great job, her voice is perfect and her emotion just right. Too bad the editor left in every pause and intake of breath she makes. I’m shocked this was approved for release in this state. Someone should tell whoever edited and produced this there are apps that literally clean up these things for you. This is the audio equivalent of a printed version full of spelling and punctuation errors.

Intrigue and impressive imagery
I've always enjoyed hearing the histories of the European courts and Middle Ages and have a fascination for the de' Medici Family. This tale, while quite beautifully articulate by the narrator at times, felt as if she were becoming bored of the in-depth descriptions of long lists made by the protagonist Lucrezia. I appreciated Lucrezia's individuality, creativity and intelligence. The writing style was different, utilising a point of view that is timeless present tense and omniscient. This was unusual but allowed insights. The story drips information, zigzagging between timelines making me the reader wonder at where in the timeline events were occurring... very enjoyable the way it all comes together in the end. I'm looking forward to a few days in Florence where I'll definitively look for examples of the portraits and places mentioned.

A beautifully written portrait of domestic violence
A beautifully written book with descriptions of people, textiles, animals and things that glow. It also makes for a convincing depiction of the incremental progression of a domestic relationship of violence that ends in murder.
