John Marrs
About this listen
From John Marrs, the bestselling author of The One. Set in the same world, and narrated by a full cast, The Marriage Act is a dark, high-concept thriller.
What if marriage was the law? Dare you disobey?
Britain. The near-future. A right-wing government believes it has the answer to society’s ills – the Sanctity of Marriage Act, which actively encourages marriage as the norm, punishing those who choose to remain single.
But four couples are about to discover just how impossible relationships can be when the government is monitoring every aspect of our personal lives, tracking every word, every minor disagreement . . . and will use every tool in its arsenal to ensure everyone will love, honour and obey.
Black Mirror meets thriller with a dash of Naomi Alderman’s The Power.

"Marrs is brilliant at twists...for the addicts of adrenaline-fuelled twisty rides." (Peter James)
"Another savagely clever near-future thriller. Provocative, terrifying and compulsive. If you loved The One, you’ll love this!" (Cara Hunter)

WOWSA
This was such an interesting premise coupled with fabulous characters. I found myself doing extra walks just so I could listen to more. Very enjoyable…but like The Handmaids Tale, let’s hope it stays fictional!

Really interesting premise of an all too possible dystopian future
Gripping storyline’s woven together in the dystopian context of The Marriage Act. Performance was also enjoyable, a smooth and engaging listen.,

To Close For Comfort!!!
John Marrs never fails to keep us in suspense.
It’s quite nerve wracking to read this book, because it’s getting so close to how this could actually be reality in the near future.

Not as good as other Marrs books
I’ve listened to every John Marrs book on Audible. They more or less got me through lockdown and my daily walks, and I really do love most of them for their twisty tales and grand imagination. This one just felt a little forced, however, and lacked the ingenuity of previous novels. No twists, no unexpected turns, just a bit of a blah addition to the The One universe of books.
