About this listen
A captivating historical murder mystery set in Victorian England. The Malvern Murders is packed with delicious dialogue, sly humour and Victorian atmosphere. Perfect for fans of M.R.C. Kasasian, E.S. Thomson, Oscar De Muriel and Karen Charlton.
Before Jack the Ripper terrorised London, Police Inspector Samuel Ravenscroft patrolled the streets of Whitechapel. Clever and hard-working, Ravenscroft nonetheless has the worst record in the force. He lets a murderer escape during a chase and is banished to the spa town of Malvern for a water treatment to cure his asthma. Ravenscroft accepts a dinner invitation from a new acquaintance, Jabez Pitzer. Before dinner, the maid finds Pitzer slumped over his desk - dead. Ravenscroft immediately recognises the signs - Pitzer has been poisoned. But the local authorities are reluctant to believe there is a murderer in Malvern. Hungry to prove himself, Ravenscroft is determined to solve the case. But the bodies mount up. Someone is killing local luminaries.

Narration better than story
The story line was, I felt, somewhat weak in places however, the atmosphere of the era was well done and I enjoyed the narrator’s performance very much

Great Story
I thoroughly enjoyed this first book about Inspector Samuel Ravenscroft so much that on completion I immediately bought the next in the series. Andrew Cullum’s narration is beautifully executed and makes the characters come to life.

Interesting mystery
It was a well-plotted story and believable without being sensationalist. I did forget, at times, that it was set in the Victorian era as the cues were not as often as other books I have read. Andrew Cullum’s narration was wonderful.
Spoiler alert!
I was disappointed at the love interest being so young. It made it feel like just another typical older man, younger woman thing. I’m sick of stories that only give romantic worth to young women from young, middle aged and older men. The only thing that I didn’t like of the story but it might stop me reading more.
