About this listen

A lord in danger. A magician in turmoil. A snowball in hell.

Exiled to China for 20 years, Lucien Vaudrey never planned to return to England. But with the mysterious deaths of his father and brother, it seems the new Lord Crane has inherited an earldom. He's also inherited his family's enemies. He needs magical assistance, fast. He doesn't expect it to turn up angry.

Magician Stephen Day has good reason to hate Crane's family. Unfortunately, it's his job to deal with supernatural threats. Besides, the earl is unlike any aristocrat he's ever met, with the tattoos, the attitude...and the way Crane seems determined to get him into bed. That's definitely unusual.

Soon Stephen is falling hard for the worst possible man, at the worst possible time. But Crane's dangerous appeal isn't the only thing rendering Stephen powerless. Evil pervades the house, a web of plots is closing round Crane, and if Stephen can't find a way through it - they're both going to die.

Warning: Contains hot M/M sex between a deeply inappropriate earl and a very confused magician, dark plots in a magical version of Victorian England, family values (not the good kind), and a lot of swearing.

Perfect blend of magic, romance, and humour!

After the untimely deaths of his father and brother, Lucien, the new Lord Crane, requests help from magic practitioner, Stephen Day, when Lucien repeatedly tries to kill himself. Can Stephen stop the magic? I loved this supernatural Victorian romance. There’s some great banter between Lucien and his manservant, Merrick, an interesting supernatural world and plot, and two fully-sketched main characters that work well together in this enemies-to-lovers romance. Cornell Collins has the perfect voice for regency audiobooks, adding the right amount of playful humour into the clipped tones. I’m so looking forward to the rest of this series!

Pitfalls of using the same narrator for different series

It is quite startling to hear the distinctive voices of Will Darling and Kim in a different series and different characters.

I only wish it was longer!

Another delightful, saucy adventure from KJ Charles, with ever-perfect narration by Cornell Collins. Definitely worth a listen if you enjoy the genre!

Loved it.

This was a wonderful story and well worth a listen. The characters were interesting, the plot was exciting, the narration engaging. I can't wait to get the next book.

narrator isn't consistent

The characters don't always have the same tone and accent, which can make conversations difficult to follow.
The narrator also seems to struggle during sex scenes, giving the tone of fear and whining to the pleading as opposed to desperate passion, and there's no sense of laughter and fun.
The story is amazing and would still recommend.
