About this listen

How the Aussie economy got hooked on the world's dirtiest cash.

Longlisted for a 2022 Walkley Award and earning the author the 2022 Financial Crime Fighter Award.

In today's ruthless world of organised crime, the best criminals aren't foolish enough to steal money out of banks. They wear tailored suits, carry briefcases, and discreetly slip money into banks.

Bigwigs, oligarchs and crime syndicates running drugs, trafficking guns and people, arming terrorists and subverting government controls are desperate to put a legitimate face on their wealth. Washing dirty money, moving it around the globe, making it look legitimate is where the action is for both criminals and the authorities chasing them.

Australia is awash with dirty money. It flows through our economy, keeps banks running, powers big business, puts coffee on restaurant tables, seeps into clubs, pubs, sport, the art world and anywhere that value is moved. It infiltrates real estate, costs billions in policing, and takes a terrible toll on Australian lives. What law enforcement agencies might lack in legislation and political will they make up for with sheer resourcefulness. When they can't get at the masterminds and bigwigs, they have honed tactics that intercept the flow of illicit cash and aim to drive a wedge between crooks and their ill-gotten wealth.

In The Lucky Laundry, financial crime expert Nathan Lynch delves deep inside this hidden world to explain how dark money has infected the lives of ordinary people - and tainted Australian democracy. He opens the curtain on the hidden world of financial intelligence, where crooks and spooks play a cat-and-mouse game inside the world's black money markets.

Enter the realm of the agents and undercover operatives who defend our democracy against the corrosive force of billions of dirty dollars.

Good content - poorly delivered

The information contained within the book is notable and important to bring to light for all Australians. Many people would not be aware that this sort of thing goes on. I definitely think it might be better to read the book itself rather than listen to the narration as it is terrible. Every sentence read by Lynch seems to sound like it is something profound which completely dilutes the actual profound elements within the book. Sorry Nathan but you've written a good book and ruined it by reading it yourself. Also- the accents when quoting people? Cringe. Beyond-belief cringe.

A riveting tale

The author weaves an engaging tale of global money-laundering from an Australian perspective, replete with stories of corruption, corporate mismanagement, shady underworld figures, inflated property prices, and legislative dereliction of duty. A well-written book, explaining some complex concepts in a concise but entertaining manner. An eye-opening expose of what really lies beneath the murky covers of our "lucky country" and its financial "success".

Compelling Reading

This book highlights a part of Australia that I was never really aware of and has opened my mind to the dark web of organised crime and how this happens before my eyes without my realisation.

Nathan provides real insights, great character insights and leave no one guessing about the depth of this issue and the impact on every Australian.

Well worth your time to listen to.

A must read for the financial crime professional

Nathan’s first book The Lucky Country is so well researched, authored and read that I could not wait for my commute in the morning to listen to a few more chapters.

Having been on this journey in financial crime prevention in Australia for over 15 years I had forgotten about all the twists, turns and plots that Nathan revisits with ease. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

Author should have paid for a narrator

The content is great but the delivery and narration is terrible. I ended up stopping listening to the audiobook and borrowed a hard copy from a friend instead. It was 2 hours of cringe before I gave up. Hope the author writes another book but more importantly pays for a professional narrator.
